I've never understood the Christmas Story thing.

It didn't exist when I was a kid and then people my age just pretended at some random point that it was a classic.

Yeah, I was a freshman in college when it came out. I had never heard of it until I was in my 30’s. It has a following for some reason.

It was off the radar when I was a child...not much peep about it...but by word of mouth watched it in the late 80's. Sort of like Shawshank, took about 5 years to catch on. A Christmas Story became a VHS hit.

Shite the classics were still Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life in the 80's.

So A Christmas Story was a nice respite from the usual suspects...and it gained traction through the 90's and then started being on TV for 24hrs. (no shame in that) It's a Wonderful Life only became popular 30 years after it was released into free domain.

It's weird to dislike this movie...but often it comes from over-saturation. So contrary view becomes avante-garde.

Aren't you liek 39-42 somewhere in that range? That was when it hit cult status. I remember watching it a bunch as a kid. And it being on TV. Not the 24-hour TBS thing, but enough to make an impression.

My BIL sits and watches the marathon in a loop while it’s on at my parents house every time we go. He must have seen it 100 times. I mean it’s ok, but damn I think it’s his all time favorite movie of any genre.

It came out in 1983. How old are you?

Not sure what's not to understand, plenty of movies gain a cult type status years after it is released and is mostly overlooked at the time of release.

By "at some random point" you probably just mean when you were old enough to watch it, fully understand it and like it.

When were you born, 80-85? Movie came out in 1983, so if people your age were going to take a liking to it for it to achieve that cult status, that would happen until the 90s at the earliest, which goes back to my 1st point, I'm not sure what part of that is so difficult to understand.

Of course you "don't understand" because you're a contrarian about everything.

Probably around the time TBS started the Christmas Eve marathon. A similar thing happy with iIts A Wonderful Life. Relatively obscure in its time, but once cable started playing it more people saw it and realized it was a good movie, then it got way over played and the inevitable back lash occurs

Loved it as a kid in the mid 80s. We watched it in school a time or two leading up to christmas break. Have not watched it in many years, so no idea if has stood the test of time.
