In this interview, he says he likes to save his money so his kids and grandkids can live comfortably and get an education.

And then there is camera shy Herbert Jones, whose preferred fashion is the free New Orleans Pelicans gear that he usually dons when he arrives at the Smoothie King Center in his old car from college.

For example, Jones still drives the same 2018 Dodge Charger he drove at the University of Alabama. He says the speedometer is at about 60,000 miles. Most of his Pelicans’ teammates drive expensive luxury cars. Pelicans and New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson, owner of Mercedes-Benz of New Orleans, parks her Maybach sedan in the arena during games.
Jones is in no hurry to buy one of Benson’s cars or one from any other dealership.
“I’m not going to change it until it breaks down,” Jones said of his Charger. “I’m going to keep using it until it breaks or stops working on me. Then, I will get another one. As long as it gets me to the gym, I’m cool.

Jones spent most of the offseason after his rookie campaign in New Orleans working out in the Pelicans practice facility. The slender 6-foot-8 forward, who will earn $1.7 million this season, did not want to pay for a vacation. Pelicans center Larry Nance Jr. offered to pay for Jones to go on vacation. Jones declined.
Jones’ father did recommend that his son take two days off. So, Jones got into his Charger and drove for four hours to his small hometown of Greensboro, Alabama, for his short vacation. No money of any note was spent as he slept one day and went fishing the next. Afterward, Jones drove back to New Orleans, returned to the Pelicans practice facility and got back to work.
“[Nance] was telling me to leave, but I really didn’t want to spend any money,” Jones said. “I went bass fishing back in Alabama and came back the same day. I didn’t go to the gym that day. I came back and went to the gym the next day.”

But New Orleans is a small market, how could any player be happy to be here?
Not just him, but I love seeing how many of the players genuinely seem to like to be here.

He doesn't seem like the materialistic type so I'm not surprised he doesn't value the glamorous materialistic lifestyle.
I do expect him to splurge a little bit once he get his second contract through.

I don't. He was basically shamed into taking a vacation and he went home to go fishing. That's not someone that indulges in material things. He mentioned kids so maybe if he needs a car that's bigger than a sedan I can see him getting an SUV, but it will probably be used, and not maxed out.

He'll be looking soon....

A few of the players are country boys such as B.I., Trey, and Devonte ( from N.C.), Zion (from S.C.),and Herb (Alabama). They seem to like it down here in this "small market".

Reminds me of a story about a guy who once said "The board man gets paid".

Yeah in that one podcast or whatever Griffin admitted they focus on euros and rural-southern guys for this very reason.

if it ain't broke, then don't fix it
and it's not like he's getting paid big money regardless of being a starter

Thanks, that was a good read.
That is pretty much exactly how I imaged Herb living his life
It's good he's saving instead of what the guys are telling him. "You'll have the money." Hell no, anything can happen with injuries and what he's made so far isn't enough to last very long if you've already been dumb with your money.

Herb deserves to be a Pelican for life

Heard it from a direct source - the front office REALLY likes Herb - probably their favorite combo of character and intelligence on the squad.
He is here to stay.

There is only one car to buy when you have young kids, Herb, and it’s an Honda Odyssey.

ETA: Sorry I was late to the Dodge Charger party.

If there were any way I could like this kid even more than I already did, I do. Smart young man that realizes $1.7 million isn’t a lot of money these days. Pelicans would be wise to lock him up now in hopes of getting a little bit of a discount. He’s well worth $10 mil a year just on his defense alone.

Can you imagine Herb talking to Lebron and Rich Paul?
He probably thinks they're as douchey as we do.
