leak at base of toilet

Noticed this discoloration of wood at base of toilet. I think it has to be a leak from bad wax ring? Although it does not feel wet at all around the base or in the crawl space under the toilet.

How new is the toilet? I once had a brand new toilet that kept having a leak under the toilet. Multiple wax rings later we discovered a tiny crack in the toilet that kept just slowly leaking water out.

I have the same thing happening and have changed wax rings multiple times. Any tips for locating potential cracks? I've looked but don't see any.

toilet is quite old probably greater than 30 years. It moves a little bit when weight is shifted on/off, so could be wax ring or a small crack I suppose.
Odd that it does not feel wet on the ground or in the crawl space underneath. and there is no subfloor just floorboards house is from 1860s.

yep that will be the wax ring and it will continue to leak until you shore up the flooring so it doesnt move any more. if the toilet moves the ring will leak because its a one time pressed on seal and as soon as the toilet rocks its no longer sealed.
everytime you flush it splashes a few drops of waste water out, then it dries before the next flush

I have been using sani seal toilet seals on my rental properties for years. They can solve some unlevel floor/spacing leaking problems. I like that you can pull a toilet and unclog a drain without needing to buy a new seal.

Secret here is get one fat wax ring and one of the smaller ones. Add them BOTH, no more leaking or wiggling. Plumbers secret

There are some good videos on youtube about how to handle wax rings if your floor isn't offset well. Also, I had some wet floor issues even after changing a wax ring and it turned out I had a drip from the tank bolt. I just had to change out the washers connecting the tank and bowl. Might want to feel around back there.

Wax ring likely, but check the porcelain for cracks and the flange for integrity when you pull the toilet to replace the ring. Then shim under/around the base at the floor so that the toilet doesn't rock.

My wife thought we had a leak at the base of our toilet. Turns out it was just me missing the toilet when peeing in the middle of the night.

If it is a crack in the toilet, the fill valve may kick on periodically, randomly. That would indicate a leak that is very slowly drawing water down as the toilet just sits. If it is the wax ring it won't go through the occasional random filling sound. It will only leak when flushed.

Likely wax ring or flange. I’m leaning more toward flange with the slight rocking.

I have put two of these in in the last two years. I had to replace the flange on one because it was never properly leveled, but it definitely didn’t help the issue.
Thus, I wobble wedged it.
So far, no leaks on either of them.

If it is a leak, the most common location would be where the tank bolts to the seat. Before changing the wax ring, put dry hands on the bolts at the bottom of the tank, where it attaches to the seat. If either are damp, that is the source, and you have to replace the rubber gasket.

Check the flange or drain pipe for a crack also. Be sure to wedge so it doesn’t move after installation also.
