Because when you are in a position of strength you have leverage and can actually get what you want out of a deal. Early on when they had "peace talks" their only option was basically surrender their country.
If they're in the position of strength that we're told they're in (which is one in which they hold all the cards) then there's no need for negotiation. In fact, I seem to recall the "Ukraine at all costs" folks saying that even hinting at a peace negotiation was tantamount to high treason.

Peace as soon as Russia removes every troop and starts writing checks to rebuild all the shite they blew up because Putin is a maniac.

Sure there is which is the same reason Russia tried to negotiate early on when they had the momentum. You try to end it all when you have the advantage. "Get out of our country and we will let your troops here leave peacefully."

What are they going to be negotiating for besides a complete and total withdrawal including ceding back territories prior to 2014?
We have been to told by the die hard Ukraine supporters that those are the only acceptable and patriotic terms.
Edit: like this guy

That's what it will be. They may 'concede' the areas from 2014 I guess.

Well considering the 1st part of their money laundering scheme has been exposed, it probably time to hang it up.

Wouldn’t you rather attempt to negotiate a cease fire/peace agreement from a position of strength rather than while you’re getting overrun?
I'm out of the loop, is Ukraine tapping on the doorstep of Russia?

I haven’t been following super closely, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to say they are in a stronger position now than a few months ago. They just retook Kherson.

It’s this simple:
1. Agree to never join NATO or allow NATO forces to be stationed in Ukraine
2. Cede Crimea for good
3. Allow Donetsk and Luhansk territories to be autonomous but still technically Ukrainian
All of this was likely possible without the first shot being fired, taxpayer dollar being sent, or drop of blood from soldiers and innocent people being spilled.
These frickers don't care and yet we have a populous that will want to fight you should you state the above.

It gives Putin the ability to claim victory with minimal impact to the status quo prior to February
I hope to see better terms than that. I’m okay with #s 2 and 3, but we should only concede NATO membership for a few years.
Russia lost the war, make them take harsher terms.
