Retriever won't stop licking paws

Have a 70lb male golden, licks his paws all day. This goes away when we spend a week or two up north at a camp far away. Near the gulf coast he gnaws and licks all day.

10 years ago I had another retriever that did this and I cured it with grain-free food for 2-3 years. Now I have multiple dogs and that's a lot harder.

Thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Ours gets an allergy shot from the vet twice or so a year I believe. Helps a ton

Definitely allergies. I'm not a vet, but I slept with one last night. Well, I sleep with one every night.

Is he licking his pads of the top of his paw? My lab licked one of her paws and the vet told me it was because of arthritis.

Some sort of allergy. Could be his food or something else he is eating or exposed to.

Mine does the same
Thing and just got mine tested. Allergic to bahiagrass and goldenrod which is everywhere

Mine was allergic to chicken. Eliminated all chicken from his food/treats and it stopped 90% of the licking.

I think mine is allergic to chicken too. I don’t recall him licking his paws a lot, but he would have a lot of skin issues early on. Switched to salmon based food and he hasn’t had any issues since.

The only time he licks his paws is when they’re coated in mud.

Could also be the red dye in food if what you feed has a red color
Salmon oil or the chews helps a lot.
Chewy.com has them

Our small dog does this too. Vet said give him a Claritin or Benadryl. Allergies.

Since it goes away when you spend time at the camp, it's almost certainly environmental allergies. No need to change food.

Options are to move to the camp, or ask your vet about a Cytopoint shot or Apoquel. I like the shot since it lasts 4-12 weeks vs a daily pill.

As long as he is not chewing them, it could be several issues, from boredom to food to environmental allergies.

Food is the easiest thing to change, so you may want to start there.

When you take him to camp, does he eat the same food as home? Does he get more exercise at camp?

So, what food are you feeding him?

Not a vet. Not really experienced this. But I would change their diet.

Cytopoint shot 2-3x a year works wonders for mine.

Change what proteins he's eating. I had a lab that licked her paws constantly...she was on lamb and rice. Swapped her over to salmon and she stopped licking her paws. Lots of folks say its the grains, but our vet said it could also be the proteins.

Y'all, food allergies are extremely rare in dogs. Food intolerances slightly less rare. Environmental allergies are much more common, especially when the symptoms abate when the environment changes

nerdy allergy info

Unfortunately, what the vets charge for these medications is legal robbery! It’s ridiculous.

Cytopoint works well but talk to your vet. It’s common for Golden’s to be allergic to hot humid areas. Trimming your dogs paws and treating the infected areas that with TrizCHLOR can help manage as well. I wouldn’t change the dogs food without talking to your vet first.
