BR Business Report: Stormwater-gate spells end for Mayor Broome

Sharon Weston Broome is done as mayor of Baton Rouge.
This is the stark reality after the October massacre that was her double-secret, truth-avoiding, flawed-fee mockery of a stormwater management plan, writes Business Report Associate Publisher JR Ball in his new opinion piece.
Not since the deep tunneling sewer system debacle of 2004, triggering the ousting of one-termer Bobby Simpson, has a Baton Rouge mayor so incompetently fumbled something so important to the future of this parish.
Baton Rouge simply has too many challenges—and, frankly, promising opportunities—to waste six more years on an insular administration devoid of tact, vision, accountability and basic leadership skills, Ball goes on to write.
Broome’s disapproval rating in a late October Daily Report poll was an eye-popping 82.2%. It wasn’t a scientific survey, but that fact can’t be enough to dismiss a 9% approval rating, Ball points out.
How do you come back from that?
You can’t.
The level of feckless leadership is reason enough to sweep Broome out the door.
Broome was in a series of meetings—including the now infamous Aug. 30 confab—with officials from the EPA and state DEQ. Did she hear anyone from the federal government utter anything about a cone of silence? Ball asks. Did the letters N, D or A flow from a single EPA lip?
As concerns were escalating from the council and the public, did she contact any federal officials—from the EPA or elsewhere—to ask what’s the deal with the need for secrecy? Did she even for an iota consider it odd that a plan of such magnitude needed to be shielded from the very public that will pay the freight?
Did she ever declare, “Hey, that’s not how democracy works!”
What did Broome do and when did she do it?
Answer: She did nothing.
Except point fingers at everyone but herself.

We need someone like Holden again. We need a competent person that wants to be mayor and at least attempt to unite the parish toward common, realistic goals to improve this place for everyone.
But instead we have Broom.

Really sad that it took this for people to open their eyes. This isn't top 10 worst things she's done.

Yet she would still win an election

"Accidentally" releasing the list of CI's from the BRAVE program to the media was up there. That was a huge frick up, and she got a pass for it from the local media because they generally suck.

So who's the next mayor gonna be? C. Denise Marcelle or Chauna Banks?

Was White really that terrible that the people of Baton Rouge refused to vote for him?

The vast majority of her constituency doesn't know what the GBR Business Report is, much less read it and participate in this poll.

I loved skip and he’s a good model for a mayor but I don’t know if he exists in the current democratic power structure within the Parish..
I ultimately blame Bobby Simpson for all ills mainly because he was a complete prick.. which bolstered the racial divide.. we thankfully got lucky with Kip but the seeds were sowed because of Simpson

This is no difference than Latoya.
I will believe it when i see it. Both are black women in power and no one is gonna push this hard enough to remove them.

Not so sure about that. Her disapproval rating is worse than Joe Biden's - well over 80%. So I guess it depends on who runs.
There's an opportunity here for a candidate that has appeal to both black and white voters to really build something here. Basically someone like Holden that can equally appease every one and isn't afraid of getting their hands dirty.
And by opportunity - I mean they could serve a couple of terms in Baton Rouge and move into statewide office, like Lt Governor, if they are good enough and energetic enough.

Rolfe McCollister must be seething right now

Not just once but put in there for a second time. Goes to show you just how stupid the voting base in BR'r both black and white really is.

This is the problem in a nutshell. Tara Wicker would have been a better choice than all of these nut jobs, but there isn't anyone competent waiting to take the reigns.

As long as the EBR Mayor-President election stays same day as the Presidential election she will win.

I’m unfamiliar with him. What did he do?

Terrible mayor.
Maybe I look back on the Holden term fondly because we weren't accustomed to a mayor that actually tried after the Simpson era.

Her successor is almost certainly going to be worse than her
