California Governor Accuses Valero Of Ripping People Off At The Pump

California Governor Gavin Newsom has lashed out at Valero, which this week reported another financially strong quarter, saying the company was ripping off Californians by selling fuels at higher prices.
In a statement, Newsom said that “Big oil is ripping Californians off, hiking gas prices and making record profits. As Valero jacked up their profits by over 500% in just a year, Californians were paying for it at the pump instead of passing down those savings.”
“That’s why we’re taking action to implement a price gouging penalty to put these profits back in the pockets of Californians,” Governor Newsom said.

This is not the first time California’s governor has accused fuel retailers and the oil industry as a whole of taking advantage of customers. Earlier this month, Newsom said in another statement that “While crude oil prices are down, oil companies have increased gas prices in California by a record 84 cents per gallon in just the last 10 days.”
“Meanwhile, oil companies have raked in unprecedented profits on the backs of hard-working Californians – nearly $100 billion in the last three months alone,” he said. “Oil companies have failed to provide an explanation for the unprecedented divergence between prices in California compared to the national average.”
In the same statement, Newsom called for a windfall tax on the industry “to ensure excess oil profits go back to help millions of Californians who are getting ripped off.”

I’m sure the differential in prices has nothing to do with the higher taxes Californians have to pay at the pump, and has nothing to do with the various more strict regulations. Nothing.

If I was oil and gas I would stop delivering to the Commies and then see what happens.

Maybe Valero gas station owners have been trying to dine at French laundry and needed some extra dough

That dumb arse has no idea how crack spreads work. And does he comment when oil and gas is losing their asses due to the spreads being shite, taking losses?

Might have something to do with your order to rid of IC engines in a few years.

This is after they just increased the gas tax when the prices were almost 7 a gallon

Price controls ALWAYS lead to scarcity and rationing

pretty sure Californians pay more than that in taxes in their fuel.
They have a 2.25% states sales tax on gas and a $.53 excise tax plus whatever your local municipality taxes.

California has the worst gas tax in the country
Something like 51 cents a gallon plus a 2.25% sales tax

I wish all the companies would give Newsom his wish, and just stop selling gas in California.

They are making a killing right now.
Almost worth making Cali grade fuel and shipping it in.

Maybe if he looks hard enough at this part of the story over and over many times, he can figure it out.

This is very troubling. Look at Venezuela or any of the other failed "socialist utopias" and you will see that they always turn the public on oil and gas companies before nationalizing them. Then the real trouble starts. They need to send a strong message that we don't do that here and vote this fool out.

Populism.
The truth has no place in society, we must base everything on emotion and feelings regardless of viability

And there is the reason that prices are so high, California is forcing a special grade and the taxes are higher(highest maybe) than every other state. It is a problem of their own making, yet they want to blame everyone else but themselves.

What a fricking dick head. The California government literally just imposed a new, additional gas tax.
