I’ve been reading the original Winnie the Pooh stories to my 5 year old. They capture the innocence, imagination, and explorative nature of childhood in such a simple and timeless way. It’s a refreshing change up from today’s typical childhood entertainment which often lacks in touch and instead just tries to grab attention by being loud and silly.
I highly recommend this Deluxe Edition which includes color illustrations. This version includes a map of Hundred Acre Wood on the inside cover that my kid loves to create games with and reference as we read the stories.

Dragon Slayer's Academy.
We still talk about how fun those were. Got them at the Goodwood library.

If your kid’s a boy, there’s still time to undo the damage from those Pooh stories.
I recommend either Indian Depredations In Texas or The Adventures of Big-Foot Wallace: The Texas Ranger and Hunter. Real stories of real men.

For older children, we love Roald Dahl books.

My Daddy would read us Uncle Remus stories and make up all the voices. He was a teacher in all black city schools, so his old black man was spot on, ha.
