The thought was that hiring a respected guy who's been in and around the league for years would equal success for a college program.
Was not the case. Being a good/decent NFL coach doesn't mean you will be a good college coach. Same thing vice versa. Doesn't help that the last time he was actually coaching before this job, majority of his team was in elementary school

He will end up somewhere
For his "coaching skills" of course

He’s a good man but not a very good coach.
He got caught cheating, blamed everyone else for it, and took zero responsibility.

Kliff would be a good hire. He wouldn’t even have to move
He was pretty bad at Tech, and reportedly hated recruiting.
That said, he seems like someone ASU would seriously consider.

Dang who saw that coming when he was hired
He was 29-26 and 17-14 in conference

I guess you forgot about the part where the AD who hired him was his former agent.

These things come in threes. Who gets canned next?

The problem was Napier was supposed to do the actual coaching and he left after a day or 2 for ULL

That would be the problem with a CEO style coach. You are only as good as your assistants and you have to pay the hell out of them so they stay rather than leave you holding your dick in your hand.
Miles and O prove that.

Harsin or Kelly.

Now who didn't see this coming?
I'm gonna be head coach but more like a father figure...and then I'll delegate everything to my friends.

His presser was one for the ages when hired.

Perfect opportunity for Dan Mullen to return to coaching.

Damn I didn't think about that, he'd potentially be a great hire assuming they don't get hammered with penalties. Low expectations, can scheme around the talent there, and it's not the pressure cooker Florida was.

Right but Arizona St should be much more solid than that

BoB would be good hire. Please take him

Should they though? I know that's the general consensus, and they're always mentioned in the occasional "sleeping giant" threads, but they haven't been much more solid than that since the Frank Kush era in the 70s.
Bruce Snyder obviously was seconds away from a national championship, but he was a little over .500 aside from that special '96 season.
Dirk Koetter was considered a promising young coach from Boise, but he could never get over the hump and finished 6 games over .500.
Dennis Erickson was an established, successful coach at multiple programs, but fizzled out quickly after a good first season. He went exactly .500 at ASU.
Todd Graham was poached from Pitt and was considered a good hire, despite being a douchebag. After a couple of 10-win seasons, he went 18-20 over his final three.
Herm was an unusual hire, but he basically performed at the same level ASU has been historically. I'm not sure who they turn to now to change that.
