Praying Mantises might be the coolest insects ever. What are your favorites?

Found this guy hanging off the faucet in my bathroom. No clue how he got there

Years back I used mantis pods in my garden to control pests. I don’t see them often but when I do they are fascinating to watch.

They look so awkward but watching them in action they are incredibly swift and elegant.

Not to mention deliciously vicious

So I moved him to my bar and put him on a wire sculpture I made ages ago.

I never kill one, they are just too fascinating.

I wish it well on its hunt

Yellow Jackets because those SOB’s will mess you up without remorse, secondly, those little caterpillar looking things that get you while working in the woods.

my daughter and I have a tradition of buying 5 or so egg sacks every year and hatching them. When I was in 3rd grade, my mom was big into organic gardening and made me do a report on them. We hatched a ton into her garden. Ive been fascinated with them ever since.

I rarely see any of the adults that we hatch but once every couple years I do. Last year I busted one hanging out on my hummingbird feeder, waiting for lunch. Another year, I was drinking beer outside and one crawled up my leg. No fear of me at all.

They rip the male’s head off and eats it while fricking so I stomp these frickers into the afterlife. It’s similar to human females.

Good post. The mantis is indeed a bizarre animal. I like how they crank their head at you and regard you with those alien compound eyes.

Years ago I went to the insect museum at the Smithsonian and they had all these big arse Southern Hemisphere bugs on display, some were real monsters. At that scale you can really get a good look at them and they are freaky.

Like ants and wasps it's a good thing these frickers aren't three feet long or we would lose the great insect war.

Even seemingly benign bugs like lady bugs are vicious indiscriminate killers and cannibals. There's a whole micro war for survival going on at that level.
