So if this event caused a reaction that disrupted an expanding area of the universe, and eventually us in a catastrophic way, then by the time we see it happen, we'll have a billion years left, assuming the disruption is traveling at the speed of light?

In 3 years, we may observe a collision between two black holes that occurred millions of years ago.
