Like in Europe you can get anywhere under 2 hours max by train.

Chicago to NOLA? That's 8+ via Amtrak

How did America get so car Dependant?

Organic need and demand, neither of which is there on a scale that necessitates better railway service.

I’m sorry, that’s the truth.

Yeah Europe is small.

A combination of self-reliance, convenience, geographic scale, and cost.

Cars>trains. I don’t have to deal or interact with anyone In my car. Plus I can stop and pick up hooker(s) anytime. Can’t do that on a train baw.

Kind of a myth. It is much better than America though.

Amtrak is just trying to extend the life of their customers in that scenario.

Paris to Avignon is close to 3 hours and that's on the TGV that runs 300 mph.

There's a ton of videos/mini-docs on the shitshow in California trying to build that supersonic bullet-train from LA to SF. So many red-tape & property roadblocks that it's practically dead on arrival, with only a short portion built. And I think it was Musk's vision to build it.

This statement is incredibly inaccurate.

The ACELA train NY to DC has done well, and attracts good customers.

It would have to get a hell of a lot cheaper. We were looking to take the Amtrak Acela train from NYC to Boston, traveling first class. Grand total round trip would have been over $1200. For that kind of money, they can kiss my arse, I'd rather walk.

Well, that's simply not true.

America has a lot more sprawl so trains aren't really a good fit. They would have been 30-40 years ago but the time has passed.

America would be wise to spend $500B on autonomous cars and ride sharing technology rather than pour that into fixed tracks. Sure, it's great that a train can get you from point A to point B but most people aren't just trying to go to train stations. They then need to catch a bus, or an uber to get to/from the train station.

Self-driving EVs could beat the pants off of rail in the next 20 years. How long will it take to build a good railway system?

The only way for passenger railway to ever succeed is to get rid of Amtrack

Shrink the distances between population centers... fill up the empty spaces between population centers.

Do you really want to live in a world if you "own a home" you live on the first floor and have tenants upstairs and in the basement just to be able to afford "owning" a home? Even if it meant you got your 450mph train from New Orleans to Chicago is it worth it?
