If nothing happens before New Years, I would probably stay in BR based on your information. You have a kid starting high school in a few years and it would be a huge shock going from a small private school in Louisiana to a large suburban high school in Texas.
She makes north of that here. She would find a job easy I’d assume, but probably would take a small pay cut.

yea no doubt. but you have to understand, these are the medians salaries for the US
civil- 82.3k
mech- 83.5k
chem- 97.3k
electrical- 95.2k
most engineers in the plant are close to that as a starting wage and are higher than that easily in under 5 years if working in the plants in south louisiana and houston area.
and even in dallas, you have to be in management to really make more than 130k. can make that easily in the plants without having to manage anyone.

Yes, I’m serious! Also, I know if we make a move, it needs to be now!

Most people don't want to work in a plant

Just wondering how many of the people who trash baton Rouge actually live(lived)there? Also, live where you're gonna be happiest dude. Not where a website of random people says you should. There's some really miserable sounding folks on this site. Not sure some of them are happy where they live now. Baton Rouge or not.

On an LSU based website? I'm guessing most of them.

trust me i get that. i really do lol, nobody really wants to work in a plant and most that do would prefer a nice office in a high rise somewhere. I get that. we do it for the money and it does or can depending on the plant and position, provide a great work life balance , great benifits etc

i didnt say in all cases
and as an engineer with tons of expierence on the project management side...i could make what i do in other spots but wouldnt have the work life balance i do now. but most, not all , Design engineers would struggle to make what they do in the plants, especially mechanicals and chemical.
with all that said, the dallas burbs are still nicer and better than anything in louisiana, same with houston burbs.
you will have tons of people talk about culture or food or throw out chain restruants....yea those people have never even tried to look around in houston or dallas burbs. its insane how nice the burbs are there, especially dallas. its crazy.
now they have their issues of course but i would much rather my kids grow up around those in the dallas burbs than around those in south louisiana, even if sending my kid to private school. we made the decision to stay, but make it very clear why we did so and that there are better places to live.

I don’t know much about Prosper, but Frisco and South lake are awesome areas.
I would lean more toward Frisco and may be moving up there from Las Colinas. It isn’t less expensive than BR living wise though.

The biggest question is the drop-off for your wife. I had a friend whose wife’s job was of a much lower quality in their new location. His job was awesome and he’s doing great professionally, but their marriage didn’t survive the move.
Just something to keep in mind.
If your wife has a comparable position, or thinks that is likely, I would certainly move. The area is better than BR and the schools are very good. The tax situation isn’t going to be as great as you think if you end up buying immediately after moving, but salaries are higher and obviously the public schools have no tuition.
ETA: Lynxcat and others, just curious how Southlake is different from the other cities.

Fair enough ill let it slide
A LOT of SDev and Comp Eng roles here are 125k + and pushing 150k + with significant experience.

“It isn’t less expensive than BR living wise though.”
That’s obvious! I can afford Frisco, I can afford BR. But it’s paying $30k in private school tuition while living in Baton Rouge is what has me wanting to gtfoh.

No problem with that in Frisco, but factor in $10-$15k/yr if not more in property tax (no state tax however).

So factor in getting more cash flow every month?

If you can afford a house there then I'd probably just go ahead and do it.
