Based off of Alaskans that I know, and keep in touch with from working up there, I would be Shocked if Murkowski ended up winning this!

Looks like that seat is going blue due to GOP vote splitting. 2 Republicans and 1 dem in the general

No, it will go to Palin. It's a 3 candidate race and something like 40% of Begich's voters would have to rank the Democrat as their 2nd choice. Maybe but I don't see it.

most of the Alaskans that dont work are Natives. They will almost exclusively vote for Murkowski and Peltola (who is Native).

Additional food for thought, the campaign with Begich and Palin was pretty negative. Begich is fighting an association with his brother (I think or maybe cousin) who is a pretty hardcore Democrat, while some Alaskans give Palin shite for not being there while running for VP with McCain (ala Bobby Jindal).

buuuuuuut, Begich has been pretty loud about how his supporters should either vote for him or Palin, not Peltola.

Who actually votes for Murkowski in Anchorage?

What are the people like?

most of anchorage itself is pretty liberal. the city council is very liberal outside of three members.

most of your conservatives or conservative leaning independents live at the air force/army base and north through Eagle River and Chugiak (essentially a suburb of Anchorage). also south Anchorage (where rich people or well off/upper middle class families live)

Murkowski will be a U.S. Senator until she's ready to step down with this ranked voting system. Will she be a leftist Democrat's top choice? No. Will she be a conservative Republican's top choice? No. But in that Top 4 "runoff", she will likely be the #2 choice of both sides.

So you mean she’s a compromise pick? The horror! The biggest problem in our politics now is the polarized nature. This board talks all the time about how far left Democrats have gone vs. yesteryear, and it’s true. The cure for that is ranked choice voting. It pulls people back from the margins. Our current primary system leads to the far left and far right having outsized influence. That’s a problem. Rank voting is the solution.

Murkowski is a well known name in Alaskan politics for decades.

She did win that seat as a write in candidate which is the most difficult path to office, virtually impossible, yet here we are

Looks to be the same. I'm guessing you're another person that has no clue how ranked voting works?

Lisa Murkowski (i)
R
66,288 votes 43.7%
Kelly Tshibaka
R
61,225 votes 40.4%
Patricia Chesbro
D
9,436 votes 6.2%
Buzz Kelley
R
3,386 votes 2.2%

It's slightly different in Alaska.

First, Alaska already had a fierce independent streak and most of its registered voters are independent or undeclared. This is why the ranked choice voting group lobbied so hard for it after Maine passed it (Maine is more liberal than Alaska, but also is pretty independent).

Second, Murkowski always has a decent chance of winning in this contest because Alaskans LOVE to keep in long-term members of Congress. Don Young is a great example of that. Most of Alaskans only care that they can get more and more Fed monies given Fedgov owns most of the land in the State (and has a large military presence and Native presence).

The way that Alaskans get money in spite of their smaller State population is by continually electing folks that at LEAST meet this bare minimum requirement (get lots of money). The longer the member is in Congress, the better chances are that they have a senior chair seat and advocate for Alaskan positions.

You are using the wrong State to say ranked choice voting is awesome for compromising.

Murkowski was always going to win this Senate seat, because most Alaskans sent compromise candidate to Washington already...and they don't mind...as long as those people elected have power and get Fed monies to the State

Bottom vote candidates drop. MAGA candidate survives. RINO Murk also survives. Murkowski dead in water moving forward. Everyone relax.

For folks looking for examples,

Ted Stevens (R) term length 1968 - 2009,
Frank Murkowski (R) term length 1981-2002,
Lisa Murkowski (R) term length 2002-present,
Don Young (R) term length 1973 - present,

Hell, Dan Sullivan (R) has been in Ted Steven's senators seat since 2015 and just won another 6 years. He beat his Democrat opponent Al Gross by 13 points in 2020.

Could be two weeks before results are known, with ranked choice.
