In any voting, everyone's vote counts. If there candidate is nixed (because they lack sufficient votes) than that is why we voted. Only thing that would help with is to ensure that you prevent someone from being elected. " I want this person, but if they don't win, I'll change to this person who actually has a chance to beat the person I don't want". That's a bullshite way to do things. If there is a primary before election day, then you get your chance to change your vote if your primary candidate didn't make the runoff/etc.
