Ranked choice voting was established in AK precisely FOR Lisa Murkowski.

Palin is running for the House seat that Don Young held before his death.

Looks like that seat is going blue due to GOP vote splitting. 2 Republicans and 1 dem in the general

Closed primary would have fixed this.

This ranked voting thing makes it easier for incumbents than even Louisiana's jungle primary style elections, especially the incumbents who just straddle the fence and play voters for decades, ala John Breaux, Mary Landrieu, etc.

Murkowski will be a U.S. Senator until she's ready to step down with this ranked voting system. Will she be a leftist Democrat's top choice? No. Will she be a conservative Republican's top choice? No.

But in that Top 4 "runoff", she will likely be the #2 choice of both sides.

It doesn’t look like you understand that system.
I think the data so far looks great for palin GOP competitor.
That Democrat 2nd choice system would never go to Palin.

How so?

It’s not “one person, one vote.”

Not sure a critique of it needs to be more drawn out.

I guess Alaska likes paying $6 for diesel?

Would have thought that alone would have knocked her out.

This is actually good. Tshibaka will make the ballot.

Murkowski can still lose the general election in Alaska.

It's still one person one vote. The only real difference is if 10 candidates are running the winner isn't decided by 11% of the voters, it's decided by the 51% who fund that candidate most desirable even if it's not their perfect choice.

Not sure how it needs to be more drawn out.

I believe what you're trying to say is, you don't want the winner to be the win by majority, you just want your person to win.

Tight race. Murkowski won by only 3.3%. If the rest of the non-Dem votes went to Kelly and the remaining Dem votes went to Murkowski, Murkowski would still win in a squeaker.

Kelly needs to be going door-to-door as much as humanly possible and get in as many big names to stump with her as she possibly can. There's still a chance Kelly could win but she's going to have to work hard.

Murkowski can be muscled; think of that classic iconic photo to Feinstein pinning her to the wall. Things are going to get bloody, and with the gloves off from the Right, she and a lot will fall in line.

Trying to predict tomorrow's scenarios applying today's social/system infrastructure dynamic is folly. Things are going to change very fast as the economy goes dysfunctional and people's desperation affects politicos.

Who the hell is voting for Murkowski at all??

Alaska has one of if not the highest welfare rate in the nation. If they can't elect a democrat they know she's the next best thing.

The main difference? Independents, which make up almost 40% of the Alaska registered voters can actually vote in the primaries to determine who represents them.

independents could always vote in primaries...just couldnt vote in the Rebuplican primary I think. They could vote in democratic primary if I remember correctly.

ETA: never mind. After reading the thread I don't know how ranked choice voting works in AK.

Yeah - this is my take on it also - not very reassuring for getting rid of the progstain Murk.

possibly...but that would have to mean a good bit of Begich voters would have to have Peltola as their #2 rank...(which means they really hate Palin OR they arent really conservative)

If Peltola wins that election, she immediately joins the AOC gang and is instantly the most liberal politician elected to an Alaska fedgov level position.

she is a nasty woman.
