He quit once he was informed that he was not going to be the starter (i.e. beaten out).

Well the obvious is race, but also believe that the fans deep down inside knows Brennan was average at best. Those guys you mentioned were great players.
A better comparison maybe the response when Finley and Max Transferred.
Myles didn't retire or step away, he essentially quit and regrets the decision to not transfer after Burrow's first season in Baton Rouge.
Myles could have had a great career at McNeese, Southeastern, or Nicholls. Instead he was led to believe that he would really win the job at LSU while only really serving as a solid emergency player when desperate.

What’s the difference?
Brennan walked away from the sport entirely and gave LSU 5+ years, earned a degree, etc.

Chase, Stingley, and others opt and receive backlash
Not from everyone, and everyone isn't supporting Brennan either.

You have to play thebest players to win. Kelly was hired to win. Brennan just wasnt good enough to start. That is a good thing. Means we have better QB'S

Did it make sense to quit though?
Maybe the only reason he came back was because no there team wanted him and to save face it appears that with his offseason pictures, football wasn't a priority.

Brennan wasn’t using LSU as a springboard. He genuinely wanted to play for a school he loved. Dude left everything he had on the practice field his last offseason trying to get the QB1 job, and decided to move on when it wasn’t meant to be.

As long as we can agree he quit when he didn’t get his way, sure
Just imagine if his dad was a meanie like mr Stingley

I honestly don't understand all the love for Brennan

it's all about situations.
LSU and the players all need each other up until a certain point.
Chase, Sting, etc. reach the point where they no longer "needed" LSU and they chose to stop providing for them even though LSU still needed them. This leaves the fans feeling like those guys abandoned the program.
Brennan and LSU are at the point where neither one "needs" the other. Brennan doesn't "need" to ride the bench for another few months. LSU doesn't "need" Brennan other than as roster filler. So this one is viewed as more of a mutual parting than an abandonment.

Wonder if it will tarnish his legacy if we end up in the same situation as last year where one of Nuss/Daniels is injured and the other enters the transfer portal and for the bowl game we have to decide between burning Howard's redshirt or playing a WR at QB and it all could have been avoided if Brennan hadn't quit?

He doesn’t have a legacy

Ah, I see where you’re going.
For the record, I think fans generally act a little too entitled when it comes to stuff like this. That being said, I don’t know why anyone would legitimately feel strongly about Brennan being the “bad guy” in this case unless they’re just trying to prove some sort of point.

Yep, and he quit because of it.

Sure he does, for a sizable chunk of LSU fans he will now be forever out there in "What Might Have Been" Land winning Heismans with Perrilloux and Cecil Collins.

It's definitely strange that people would get more worked up over starters opting out and transferring when there were still games to play over a 3rd string QB who's completely walking away from football.
