Seriously, what makes the Mona Lisa such a big deal?

Heard a factoid that people are allowed to view it for 15 seconds and then must move on.
Is it just because Da Vinci painted it? Is there anything else special about it?
It's the most famous painting in the world apparently, and I don't really understand why.
edit:
From a quick google search.

Da Vinci used optical illusion to create a unique smile through perspective and shadow work. Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa in such a way that the eyes of the Mona Lisa fall directly into the viewer's focus, while the lips fall just below the periphery of vision.

Something about that smile.

It became really famous after it was stolen and smuggled to Italy.

I am quite uncultured, only because I find most of that stuff honestly silly and completely objective.
My most expensive artwork is Days End Double by Linda Pickens. Well the framework cost more than the print.
I do like abstract art though.

Why Is the Mona Lisa So Famous?
quote:
Although the Mona Lisa is undoubtedly good art, there is no single reason for its celebrity. Rather, it is hundreds of circumstances—from its fortuitous arrival at the Louvre to the mythmaking of the 19th century to the endless reproductions of the 20th and 21st centuries—that have all worked together with the painting’s inherent appeal to make the Mona Lisa the world’s most famous painting ever.

Some say it's a self portrait in female form.
Should go up in value now that binary sexuality is popular.

Wasn't it because of the perspective and style of the painting?

Mona Lisa Vito?
Fifteen seconds would be plenty enough time.

If you compare it to other paintings of people during that era, it is remarkable.
- the detail of how the hair is actually parted and partly pulled back with the veil on.
- the detail of the hands
- the expression on her face gives off a mystery of what is happening / going through her mind.
Was painted in 1503. (Look at other paintings in 1503).

There is no doubt that the Mona Lisa is a very good painting. It was highly regarded even as Leonardo worked on it, and his contemporaries copied the then novel three-quarter pose. The writer Giorgio Vasari later extolled Leonardo’s ability to closely imitate nature. Indeed, the Mona Lisa is a very realistic portrait. The subject’s softly sculptural face shows Leonardo’s skillful handling of sfumato, an artistic technique that uses subtle gradations of light and shadow to model form, and shows his understanding of the skull beneath the skin. The delicately painted veil, the finely wrought tresses, and the careful rendering of folded fabric reveal Leonardo’s studied observations and inexhaustible patience. And, although the sitter’s steady gaze and restrained smile were not regarded as mysterious until the 19th century, viewers today can appreciate her equivocal expression. Leonardo painted a complex figure that is very much like a complicated human.

bullshite. Saw it in 2020 and was there a lot longer than 15 seconds. Nobody was asked to move along.

1. Da Vinci kept it his entire life.
2. Acquired by a French King.
3. Owned by Napoleon.
4. Stolen from the Louvre and lost for years.
The art theft is when the painting really became famous, but the history added to the story.
