He spent his life putting shoes on ugly fat women and then had to come home to Peggy and the only other woman he saw on a regular basis was chicken-legs Marcy-Darcy.

Best episode ever was when he and Peggy had the big fight and he went to stay with his bachelor buddy. They go out drinking and bring home two hot stewardesses.
His buddy goes in the bedroom to hang one and the other makes it obvious she is ready to go. Al breaks down and tells the luscious blonde he is "married with children" and she says "So?"
Show ends with him rushing into the house with an anxious Peg on the couch. Al pulls a blonde wig out of a paper bag and tells her "put this on and get upstairs." Definitely not gay.
