POS company. Hope they go under.
CLT-NYC? Go business class on the Carolinian (Amtrak train) for $80. Beats the heck out of flying.

AA did that to us 5 years ago. 4.5 hrs on tarmac in Austin. Not at a gate. Out in the parking lot. Told us you can get off but not getting back on.

Think about having kids under the age of 2. I'd be pretty goddamn upset.

I just don’t understand why they can’t deplane and then let them back on when ready
When it happened to me (sat for about 1.5 hours) they had pushed back from the gate while doing maintenance so another plane could have the gate. The busy airports are so heavily scheduled that they don't want to disrupt any other flights and would rather just have one plane of seriously pissed off people. When it happened to me (about 30 years ago), they herded us off plane to a holding room with no food, drinks, and only 2 pay phone. We were in a room on the ground level as we deplaned down a set of stairs and not the jetway to a gate.
It was awful and even back then everyone on the plane was compensated. If you wrote them a complaining email, you got compensated more. It sucked.

anyone know what the name of the law that was passed by congress to prevent this?

Agreed. If they were truly “sobbing”.
That said. I’d be pretty fricking pissed sitting on a plane for six hours. AC or no AC.

If I had toddlers or a baby with me during this, I would've been escorted off the plane and maybe put on a do-not-fly list
If we're not on Southwest, we will send one parent on the plane with our stuff and the other parent waits with the kids at the gate until the literal last minute before they shut the doors. All about minimizing that plane time

guess I’m in the minority but I fly AA all the time from DFW and never have any problems. Maybe it’s just cause I’m a business traveler and always have my earbuds in and mind my own business Knock on wood I’ve flown AA probably a dozen times over the pandemic and not once have had a delay more than 30 minutes or a cancellation
I fly about once a month since beginning of of 2021 when work let us do business travel again. This is exactly my situation with AA for the most part. It helps to be an Admiral’s Club member and all that.
I see more issues with Southwest when I use them.

We do the exact same thing. No sense in both of us being trapped

one size doesn't fit all when dealing with delays but the main reason for not immediately letting everyone off to "chill" in the terminal is that everyone typically scatters like ants, don't stay in the area, and don't listen to PAs, the delay would be compounded by the extra time it takes to round up the cattle and those that missed the flight because they left the area would end up starting threads on here about how shitty the airline du jour is
Passengers fault that airlines don't let them off the plane. Got it!

It’s unbelievable how shitty the airline industry is from both a customer experience and profitability standpoint.
I can’t think of another industry that needs more disruption. Whether it be from a new airline concept or a new mode of transportation - something major needs to happen for anything to change.

That’s false imprisonment sue their arse, they did that to mud in Memphis one summer for about 2 hours. The pilot left the gate so he could get a ontime departure, (My wife used to be a Base Manager for American), and the AC wouldn’t come on when we weee on ground or something back then. The guy in front of me was elderly big guy and his bald head went from ok, to sweating like crazy to red to purple, we all thought he was about to have a heart attack

Ok, so what’s a reasonable amount of time to sit on the plane? Six hours seems a tad excessive, no?

as I said, one size doesn't fit all, and there are tons of other factors that go into the decisions, never quite as simple as it seems, especially to someone not aware of all of the logistics involved, which would be about 99.99% of the passengers
ETA: "Six hours seems a tad excessive, no?"
they weren't on a plane for six hours, sometimes it's just not your day

A few years ago, they had a situation like that in Nigeria. While the plane was on the ground, smoke started coming out through the ventilation system. They would not let the passengers disembark because they did not want more publicity about how shitty Nigerian air safety is.

That’s when I grab my chest and keel over. All the phones come out and action happens.

Only when it happens to you being herded off after 1.5 hours, sitting in what feels like a holding cell for another 1.5, with very little info and finally departing 5 hours after your initial departure time when it's all the fault of the airlines feels like a little more than a "bad day".
All I want to it be honest with me. Tell me it's gonna be a while. Tell me I'm on my own if I leave. Yes, I get that people are idiots and will scatter. I get the logistics after 35 years of a job that requires travel. The problem is that you a literally at the mercy of what they decide to do with you and have no choice at all...no ability to make any decision as to other modes of travel or other carriers.

Since 777Tiger has been worn down!
There is a delicate balance between not giving you the opportunity to deplane every three hours (which is what the federal regulation requires) and throwing our hands up and letting everybody off every time we have a 30 min delay. Every situation is different. I wish I always knew exactly how long the delay will be, but sometimes the 15 minutes turns into 3 hours?
I try to use 20+ years of experience to massage the situation and do everything in my power to lessen the pain, but some days everything comes up up craps. With 2000+ departures a day every once in awhile you have a bad experience.
A maintenance delay can turn into an aircraft swap which now needs the correct amount of gas and new flight plan/ paperwork. The catering is now incorrect and your luggage has to be unloaded/reloaded. We’ve now lost our ATC departure/ arrival slot. The only available gate at the airport is reserved for the 777 headed to LHR that’s pulling up in 30 minutes. Maybe I know the line of thunderstorms is going to hit in 45 minutes or we need to get airborne in an hour or our destination will be weathered out or closed when we get there. Maybe the pilots or flight attendants are about to time out and strand you in BFE if we don’t close the door and leave the gate. Maybe my spider senses are tingling and I know we should get some more gas so we have time to hold going into Newark so we don’t divert and strand you overnight in BFE?
Sorry the holes in the Swiss cheese line up occasionally and screw us over, but it’s not because we hate the customers
On a side note, I can’t believe how many upvotes I’ve given Tuscaloosa ITT!
