I’ve been watching this YouTube channel where they cover WW2 week by week and I knew Italy wasn’t as dangerous and powerful as Nazi Germany but dadgum I didn’t realize just how inept they were.

I can’t blame them completely I guess because he noted in one of the videos that the Italians weren’t onboard with war like the Germans were and they saw it as simply being Mussolini’s personal war, the Italians in general weren’t vested in it at all. Hitler had told Mussolini not to invade Greece, at least not until they won their North Africa campaign and defeated Egypt. Well Mussolini saw all the success Nazi Germany had in conquering Europe and didn’t want to be left behind or seen as the little man on the totem pole below Hitler so he invaded anyways and didn’t tell Hitler until it was commencing. And just like everything else they did the Italian invasion of Greece turned out poorly and the Nazis had to come to the rescue.

Here’s the YouTube channel it’s really good if you like WW2 history etc:

Italy and Germany waging war together is like an SNL skit on the annals of history

If you think Italy was a bad ally to have in WWII, just wait until you find out how horrid Austria-Hungary was in WWI. Seriously, Germany may have been great at waging war, but when it came to picking allies, they sucked.

Italy was always a very fractured country. They spent more years controlled by the Catholic Church than as a united country after the fall of the Roman empire.
The regions had their own governments for generations that acted completely autonomously from one another. People in the North have almost nothing in common with the people in the south, etc. hard to bring a country together to fight when you don’t have a common purpose and sense of nationalism.
There women are certainly worth fighting for though.

Italy was literally the only European power that couldn't conquer a weak African country. Even Belgium had their own colony, BELGIUM.

Italy was horrible in WW2...but they gave us Italian food.

Germany was horrible in WW2...but they gave us Kraut.

If German food was better, we'd be more forgiving.

Here's the series in case y'all were wondering

GREAT SERIES. Their "Pearl Harbor in real time" episodes were incredible

If you start in 1939 you get a very detailed account of "The Winter War" between Finland and USSR. The Fins don't get enough credit for their fighting spirit.

I watch them during my lunch break

A long time ago I remember playing a strategy game, “ Tobruk”, based on the north African tank battles in that area.

One side in that game controls German and Italian forces, and I remember the Italian tanks were only good as diversions. In fact one of the Italian tanks carried the name “Flaming Coffin”.
