Hi all

I started a new job and have the ability to move out of state. I wanted to ask you all what is a good place to move for someone who is young and just out of college? I like sports and outdoors, and don't want to move to a big urban city. What are some thoughts on this?

Been a lurker for many years and wanted to get some good advice from yall here on TD! Thanks

Check out Granbury TX located about 50 miles SW of Fort Worth. Enjoy lakeside rural living, but only an hour away from restaurants, etc.

We could name 50 places if you would like.
Want to narrow things down for us?

I mean; Bentonville is giving 10k bonuses for remote workers to relocate to NWA. Lots of mountain biking, fishing, paddling, hiking and climbing in the area.

Bella Vista or Beaver Lake would give you lakeside with access to larger area.

Middle Tennessee is great. Beautiful scenery, lots of places to hunt and fish, no state income tax, and people are very friendly.

Move to a big urban city while you’re young, get out your comfort zone. Your older self will thank you

Greenville, SC.

The downtown area is great. Very close to the mountains for hiking and outdoor activities. Downtown is clean & fun with predominantly post grad age kids. Clemson is close by and there’s a hockey team & baseball team that has pretty good support.

ETA- lots of beautiful lakes nearby and only about 3.5 to Charleston/beach.

Sports and Outdoors interests usually results in selecting states in the 4 seasons zone.
This is where you actually get a spring, summer, fall, and winter. Instead of 2 summers, or 2 winters.

The relative band is something like:
SC/NC/Virginia, KY/Tn, AR/Mizz, KS/NB, WY/CO/UT, NV.
You obvioulsy can throw things in like Northern GA/AL, Tulsa, So. Idaho, etc.

Then, you can narrow your search down to places that are in decent driving distance to an airport or a few major cities.
If you are hardcore about winter sports, you'll gravitate more towards appalacia or rockies over midwest.
If you like camping, or farming, or fishing, or hunting.... all of those things shrink your options.

If you are married, or have kids, or are single... that changes things.
Where is your family?
Why not move around alot?
Travel?

It's really hard to pick a place for someone else because there are alot of variables.

When I start thinking of moving, I gravitate to Charlotte, Nashville, Tulsa/Springfield/Bentonville, Denver, and SLC.
(Well, there and the towns within an hour or two of there.)
You can almost draw a straight line on a map and hit them all.

Missoula, MT is a pretty awesome college town, that has most of the amenities that you’d want, including a young population (the University of Montana is located there). It’s got bars, restaurants, nearby hiking, fly fishing, hunting, etc… Montana is like a less populated Colorado (including legal recreational marijuana )

Sylva NC - small town within an hour of Asheville, adjacent to the Smokies, Western Carolina University within 15 minute drive, tons of outdoor things to do, many local brew pubs, no big city issues

I'd move to:

Greenville, SC
Smaller towns close to Raleigh, NC
Wilmington, NC
Smaller town outside of Charleston
Anywhere along the coast in Maine
Carmel or Monterrey in California
Near San Diego
Smaller towns near Seattle
Scottsdale, Arizona
Florida: panhandle towns, Sarasota area, Islamorada, Vero
Beach, Melbourne, Jupiter, Sanibel, Naples, maybe Ft. Myers.
Smaller town close to Austin- like Georgetown.
Texas Hill Country towns- Dripping Springs, Fredericksburg, Blanco, Bandera, Wimberley, Boerne, Kerrville, Utopia, Concan, Leakey, Llano.
