Just got back from the film. I know there's a pre-screening thread but felt compelled to start a new threat for those on this board that have seen the film to get better reviews than the so-called experts...

It's a mixed bag. There were parts that were really good and parts that just didn't fit.

I thought the ending was a little rushed and sloppy but OK enough.

My wife said the film should've been sponsored by Kraft for the Cheese factor.

I liked Jane Foster's role and how they explained her receiving the power of Thor worked.

Christian Bale's villainous portrayal was good but too menacing for a movie that was on the campy side.

The Soundtrack was outstanding and it was essentially a GNR Greatest Hits.

No Spoilers until page 2.

The irony in this being such a painfully cheesy joke itself

Seeing it tonight sounds like there’s a clash and style and the movie is too short but overall a good film

I enjoyed it. Weaker than Ragnarok but still head & shoulders above first 2 thors.

Humor was weaker than the 3 & Gorr was a much more menacing darker character in the comics.

Bales performed well, 1 scene(head scene) they really let him cook but the rest of the film didn’t let him explore the character. Also they made it too much on the sword being the problem than Gorr.

Going tonight but it looks like the hero's costuming resembles Captain Freedom from The Running Man.

How “gay” is this movie? Little STLDawg is a big Thor fan but I don’t want to have to deal with that.

As we walked out of the movie I was thinking about how I should probably rewatch The Boys in order to get the bad taste of this movie out my mouth. Without prompting, my wife piped up, "I'll pay for us to see Maverick again so we can get some testosterone back".

Before I get into the bad points, let me touch on the positives... since that will go faster.

The music score was great! The music fit with the scenes.

The acting was solid. Jane Foster's character has always been a little bland to me, but this movie gave Portman the opportunity to give her more life (pun intended).

Bale was rock-fricking-solid. His character needed more time for exposition, but he made the most of the time that didn't end up on the cutting-room floor.

The story was a good idea. I especially liked how they incorporated Jane and that the incorporation was really hurting her. That gave a good balance to her having the power of Thor.

The special effects were well done.

And that's pretty much it.

This movie suffers primarily from trying to keep the story on this serious-action-yet-silly-campy-comedy balance beam. Many liked Ragnarok over Dark World due to the humor, they turned that humor up a few notches in this one and it fails.

They had a great story to pull from, at least 50%-75% of the writing is done, yet they had to do stupid shite like over-use the goats' screaming, Thor's wildly varying power levels, Heimdall's kid being trapped yet arguing about his new name, the whole departing scene with the Guardians, Thor's speeches which always ended goofily, etc instead of telling story.

Gorr's change was far too quick. He went from worshipping to "all gods must die" in almost a heartbeat. Have him struggle a bit more, make his god increasingly a-hole-ish, then have him kill his god (maybe even reluctantly). Next up, he's attacked by another god (fearful and/or in revenge) so he kills that one and that brings him to the idea that he may just have to kill all the gods because they may all come for him eventually.

Yes, the sword has a curse but they didn't really explore that well enough, they just used it as a cheap vehicle to avoid storytelling. Another aspect of their weak storytelling was how Gorr amassed the power to fight (much less kill) gods. It can't all be just the sword. They should have had him absorbing the powers of the gods he killed (or at least some of them, or they wane after a while).

This would have given more fleshing out as to why he felt he needed to kill all the gods. To really drive home the curse, we needed a solid scene like with Smeagel in LoTR where the curse has him fighting a battle within himself and he's losing, perhaps with Gorr vacillating back and forth while looking to and from the sword.

This would have also helped the ending where he changes so quickly from wanting to kill all gods to wanting the last god he tried to kill to raise his brought-back-to-life daughter. Without having seen the sword's influence changing him over the course of the movie, Gorr's change of heart is so abrupt that it reminds me of another shitty "do it for love" moment.

Hell, it wouldn't have been too out of place if Thor had looked down at Jane and said "Martha" with Gorr responding with "why did you say that name!?!"

And then we have Thor's power levels. He struggles with Gorr while at full power yet has enough power to lend out to an army of kids. Sure, he's losing the fight until Jane shows up but he lost against him even when at full power.

I mean... he is able to use Zeus' power to give all the kids powers to fight the demon hoard, but you know what would have been better? BRINGING THE ADULTS ALONG TO DO THAT shite. That whole battle was just shot after shot of "let's imagine weird shite to have the kids do". That and the final scene of Thor and his "daughter" charging into battle had a definite 3 Ninjas vibe.

And while I was geeking out at Eternity, the way they just dropped him into the middle of the story came across as a poorly thought-out, last-minute rewrite. Nothing is said at all, especially by Gorr, about Eternity until Zeus mentioned him. Where did Gorr hear about Eternity and this ability to grant a wish? And Stormbreaker being the key to accessing Eternity? Instead of explaining that we get a "heart-warming" story about how Korg's people procreate by having "two daddies meet near a lava pit where they hold hands for two days and a baby Korg appears".

As mentioned earlier, to me the biggest problem was that it seemed like they were trying to make a serious action movie while also trying to make a campy comedy. This makes portraying Thor incredibly tough as he has to be both a serious warrior and a goofball. I didn't care for his goofiness in Ragnarök but it was very limited. In this movie he can't even give a speech without flubbing it like a moron. It was so much that it hampers thinking of him as a warrior with millennia of fighting skills under his belt.

The "jealousy" of Stormbreaker and the goats' screaming were way overdone (going to the too-much-comedy aspect). I think it would have had a better effect if the question of whether Stormbreaker could be jealous was left alone. Let it remain ambiguous and have fun with keeping the audience wondering. The goats' screaming should have been shut down at the very beginning of the scene where they are brought onto the Guardians' ship and then used as a surprise (like right before they break through the giant window into Zeus' area). This also goes toward the point of spending too much time on campy humor instead of storytelling, but these two points were hammered over and over like beating a dead... goat.

All in all, I place this at the bottom of the official MCU movies. I would say wait for it to come out on Disney+, but really only if you are just adamant to have seen all the MCU movies. Otherwise, skip it and spend the money on a gallon or two of gas.

I thought Thor's powering up the children to fight the monsters was unnecessary..

I didn't like Jane's death...She should have survived with she and Thor raising the kid...

New Asgard being turned into a tourist trap would both funny and stupid..

The Starlord/Thor Bromance was comical if not a little too gay..

I totally got a kick out of Stormbreaker's jealousy..

The goats were over the top..

Can someone please flush out the Gorr / Love / Eternity relationship? Is Love Eternity reincarnated?

Tried too hard to be funny. The first half of the movie was mostly a waste of time.

Zeus skipping around in a skirt was kind of sad. Isn't he like the strongest of the gods? Oh and Russell Crow looked more like Robert Baratheon than Zeus.

Wondered how Jane would get her "powers'. I guess this theory works. And as it turns out, the hammer was both helping AND hurting her?

That said, were there 2 different actors playing the Jane with and without the helmet?

Now, we are going to get a Thor vs Hercules movie? That could be fun.

Missed the second post credit piece. Apparently Jane was welcomed into Valhalla as "Mighty Thor"?

Pros:

Gorr was a fantastic villain for what time he was on screen, sucks that he died but still remains an upper tier Marvel villain

The fight in the Shadow Realm was one of my favorite fights in the MCU, was just really cool overall and everything being black and white added to it.

They handled the Jane becoming Thor storyline pretty well and gave her a nice sendoff although she’ll likely be back in some form eventually.

The soundtrack was solid as well too although I’m pretty sure they played Sweet Child twice

The Gods as well as Zeus were played pretty accurately with them all being lazy assholes who don’t give a shite about anything other then drinking and fricking

We get to see Hercules at the end which will be great

Cons

The constant shift in tone gave me whiplash at times especially between serious scenes and comedic scenes. Perfect example was Thor and Jane joking around right after all the kids were taken

The runtime needed to be about 30 minutes longer especially in regards to the Gorr scenes.

Gorr felt underdeveloped at times while he was still a great villain the switch to wanting to kill all Gods was weirdly sudden and not being able to see him slaughter any of the Gods was disappointing

Just got out.

I really Enjoyed it. I think Gorr was a cool villian. Thor needs a villain with a weapon to fight. I think The humor was funny. I laughed A lot. They had the heartfelt moments.

Criticisms I dont Agree with but understand: If you’re tired of himbo Thor your not going to love this movie. I dont Think it’s as bad as people make it out to be. He definition hasn’t gone full retard. Never go full retard.

Criticisms I don't Understand:

“Gore’s motivations aren’t fleshed out well enough.” I had Seen that a few times and I think it was pretty clear in the opening scene. His god shits all over him after his child dies after a life of worship.

“This doesn’t move the MCU forward” it’s a stand alone movie, but we do get an introduction to the celestial.

Last thoughts: I feel like GOTG3 getting pushed back may have really fricked us out of some great GOTGx Thor fun. I’m hoping we still see some of it.

I just got out. I actually liked it. Not great but not horrible. Middle pack but better than Dr Strange. I liked the characters. I didn't think Valkerye being a King and Korgs being only men was that "woke". I think some people want to be offended. The goats were annoying though.

This make no sense, so Moljnir just nope the frick out of the the biggest battle for all of existence? It clearly was able to reform itself and able to use its power to even greater effect but nah, frick that Endgame battle, I'll just chill when Thor call for me.

Wakiti: Okay Chris, here the source material, remember he's a GOD slayer! He's out for revenge.

CB: Cool I can do this, i play a lot of these type of roles before.

Wakiti: Cool!

Proceed to make the entire film campy and unserious.

Look like Christian Bale the only guy to bring his A-Game to act.
