My dad was born and raised in Jackson in the 50s and 60s. His Alzheimer’s is getting to the point that he mostly just has long term memories.
I mentioned bringing him to Jackson so he could see where he lived and he was pretty excited about it. My uncle called and told me to stay away from West Jackson. Dad lived on Capitol St and Culberson near the zoo.
I know nothing about Jackson other than what I read on here. Is it really dangerous in those areas? Bad place to take my dad?

From what I remember the Zoo area of Jackson is pretty rough. And that’s been a long time ago. I’m sure some other posters can prob shed some better light on it though. It May upset him to see his old, nice neighborhood turned into a crummy ghetto.

It’s not worth your or your dad’s life.
Maybe you could get in on a JPD ride along and have them take you down there. That would be marginally safer.

I know a couple who live outside Jackson. Husband is law enforcement. Wife is forbidden to go to Jackson.

Yeah, I wouldn’t go there. I mean, I’d drive through there alone but not with a loved one with me. Not to mention it would probably be depressing for him to see what that area has turned into.

Jackson is actually #1 in homicides per capita in the U.S., so keep that in mind. However, you can drive through west Jackson from I-220 (zoo) to North Gallatin, down to Hwy 80 from the hours of 8am to 11am in relative safety, Monday-Wednesday and possibly Thursday.
One area not to venture into is the five-points location NW of the Jackson medical mall and east of Hawkins Field Airport, or Jackson Zoo-2 miles east. Medgar Evers Blvd to Northside Dr ---Stay away.

My grandmother’s family owned an entire city block thst I grew up going to in the 60’s. It wasn’t a half mile to JSU. Agree with the posters, driving by any of my family’s homes now is a big no. Part safety and part not wanting to see neighborhoods full of backyard gardens and front porches looking like they do now.

West Capitol past the King Edward Hotel was like entering Mogadishu, and that was back in 2001 when I was a courier for a law firm. Can’t imagine what it’s like now.

The Kind Edward Hotel was renovated and reopened for the first time in like 40 something years around 2010. The area on that end hasn't changed. Mogadishu starts once you pass under the rail bridge heading west.

JACKSON, Miss. — Jackson police are investigating a triple shooting that happened across the street from the King Edward Hotel Friday night.
According to police, one person was shot twice in front of the bus station on Mill Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have identified the victim as Clinton Newsome, 53.
Police said a second victim was also shot in the abdomen at the intersection of Mill and Amite.
The third victim was shot in the right arm at the intersection of Mills and Capitol streets.
Officers talked with a witness on the scene and learned the shooter and Newsome had a physical altercation at Farish Street Park. During the altercation, Newsome took some crystal meth from the suspect. The suspect then caught up with the victims near the intersection of Amite and Mill streets and began firing multiple rounds with a shotgun.

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson police are investigating a chaotic scene that unfolded outside of the King Edwards Hotel on Sunday, May 9. A Facebook Live video showed a busy downtown area as officers responded to the scene. “It was probably about 11:30 p.m. It all sounded like a war zone. I heard, ‘boom boom boom boom,'” said Mark Bradford, who said he was visiting Jackson at the time. According to witnesses, dozens ran from the Daquiri Bar on Capitol Street. Hotel guests said they were awakened by what sounded like gunfire. “I looked out, and I didn’t really see anything. Then, maybe about a minute later, I heard some more gunshots off in the distance,” said Bradford.
