Jeff Samardzija professional decision revisited

Who here remembers Samardzija from Notre Dame? Remember watching him during his Notre Dame days and he ultimately decided to go pro in baseball rather than opt for the NFL draft. If he would’ve chosen the NFL, how do you think his career would’ve played out?

Probably would have had some concussions and received permanent bodily damage.

His career MLB earnings were $122,725,000, without the wear on his body from football. I'd say smart choice.

He made the right decision. This isn't even a debate IMO.

Probably would have spent 5 years in the NFL and then started a new job

Probably would have been good, but made a lot less money and be a lot more beaten up

Those ND helmets are so much better than what they have now

a WR career is what, 3-4 years, compared to him being able to toil in minors if it doesnt work for 4-5 years+??
Baseball was his correct decision, he's made a nice chunk of change playing it

Kyler Murray should’ve picked baseball too. Guaranteed contracts and a lot easier on the body. Samardzija was solid but never elite. That gets you $100million in baseball. You have to be elite in football to come even close to that money. Elite in baseball can get you close to $1 billion nowadays.

I’d say bad decision had he gotten stuck in the minors his entire career. Making it to the big leagues is a hard thing to do and a big risk he had taken. Luckily it panned out perfectly

The first receiver taken in that class was Calvin Johnson. Samardzija has higher career earning than him. Even if Johnson didn’t retire early it would have been something like 160 to 120.
Edit: the next two receivers taken were Ted ginn and Dwayne Bowe. Both had pretty successful nfl careers, and they combined to make about 30 million less than Samardzija

Without even researching, I would assume he made a lot more money playing baseball than he could playing football…and he doesn’t have all the wear and tear on his body.
It definitely would’ve been cool to see him play in the NFL, though.

I definitely thought he made a mistake at the time but realized years ago he was better off in MLB.

LSU made his arse quit. Decided football wasn’t the sport for him after that Sugar Bowl beatdown.

If you are equally talented at football and baseball at the HS level, especially pitching, I’d choose football. If you are equally talented at football and baseball post college, baseball starts to get a lot sexier.

He was really fun to watch as a WR but yah he made right choice

He was a stud in football

He will NEVER regret the decision he made between the ages of 40 - 85 (or death)
