Has it been too warm to put down MSM?

New to using MSM & rolling with your standard DIY dad 2 gallon sprayer over 5,000 Sq ft.
"Mix 1/8 teaspoon in 1-2 gallons of water"
Does this mean 1/8 per gallon, or 1/8 per 2 gallons, or hell just wing it somewhere in-between?

The measuring tool that came with my bottle had ounces on it. For 2 gallons use .05. MSM recommends .1 for 4 gallons. Use the tsp. route if that's what you're comfortable with.
If your problem isn't too awfully bad try spot spraying as a tester.
Let us know how it went.

It can be confusing for those new to lawn weed control. The label directions are to apply the equivalent of 1/8 teaspoon, 0.5 grams, of the herbicide per 1000 sq ft of lawn. Think of the water as a carrier, not a dilutant. For some people their brand of sprayer and walking gait can cover 1000 sq ft with 1 gallon of water, others such as myself, it takes 2 gallons per 1000 sq ft.
So calibrate your sprayer. Take your 2 gallon sprayer fill it with 1 gallon of water, mark off 1000 sq ft in your driveway, and start spaying the driveway with a fan spray as you were spraying your lawn. See how many sq ft of driveway you cover with that one gallon. Then adjust the amount of water in the sprayer that allows you cover cover 1000 sq ft - 1, 1.5, 2…. gallons whatever it is for you. Then add 1/8 teaspoon of MSM to that amount of water in your sprayer, plus surfactant, and go spray 1000 sq ft of lawn.
To spot spray, I personally add 1/8 teaspoon of MSM to gallon of water and do a quick, light spray to a “clump of weeds”. Don’t over-spray or saturate or you might kill the surrounding grass.

You’ll turn your yard orange with 4x the dose. That stuff is potent

How many grains of MSM equals 1/8 teaspoon?

I assume you mean “grams” (as a “grain” is also a older used unit of weight as well). Anyway, 1/8 teaspoon of MSM is approximately 0.5 grams. (1 “grain” = 64.8 milligrams)

Wow- Super helpful info & breakdown. Thank you!
Will keep ya posted on the outcomes.

Let me rephrase. How many “pellets” of MSM equals a 1/8 teaspoon.

That seems like a pretty dumb way to determine quantity/weight
If you can afford the MSM, then you can afford a cheap set of measuring spoons and measuring cups.
I have a set of measuring spoons and cups that I leave in my garage that only get used for herbicides/insecticides.
No one is gonna sit there and count out the pellets

If you go buy Manor as your MSM herbicide it comes with a measuring tube.

It is for all practical purposes a powder - you can’t count them; either weigh or measure by volume.

Followed all the steps down to spraying the driveway to calibrate. Super helpful!
Hit the full yard 2wks ago and things are changing.
VBW - Most turning purple, some still laughing at me.
Lespedeza - Crispy
Bahia - Showing signs of death
Dollar Weed - slight change, some yellowing.
Also recently realized I have mega dove weed or carpet grass (possibly even both) and Kyllinga coming in strong.
My question:
Can I follow my first MSM application with Celsius to try to hit some of these other things that MSM won't touch?
Or, if I stick with MSM for 2nd application how long should I wait to nail'em all with Celsius?
I was trying to not drop more $$$, and I am now totally locked in on this addiction of lawn perfection now.

We’ll you definitely need Celsius for those 3 as MSM Turf doesn’t control them.
That’s an interesting question as to how long you should wait to spray Celsius to control those 3 weeds following a MSM Turf from 2 weeks ago. Spraying to soon following the MSM Turf application could damage the turf grass - normally one would follow up with a 2nd MSM Turf application about 4 weeks following the first.
I would think if you can spot spray clumps of Doveweed, carpetgrass and kyllinga you could you spray them now. But if you were thinking a whole lawn spray of Celsius following the MSM Turf application from 2 weeks ago I’d be inclined to tell you to wait an additional 2 weeks. I’d be interested in ronk’s thoughts on this.
And if you haven’t picked this info up yet on Celsius from other threads, even though the initial price is high, that bottle will last you 4 to 5 years so its overall annual cost is no higher than just about any other herbicide.

Those herbicides have two different modes of action. Msm stops cell division and Celsius stops amino acid production. Because of that, they can be used at the same time or shortly after one another. Like any application of herbicide, over spraying or mixing a strong batch or spray on a 95 degree, full sun day may yellow the grass
Has craw said you’ll need Celsius to control the weeds you listed.

Ronk or Craw - Not to hijack this thread but have either of you ever sprayed MSM and Sulfentrazone together? I have some spots of Button weed, Goosegrass, Barnyard grass, Crabgrass and Nut Sedge that didn’t die with the MSMA I sprayed 2-3 months ago. I’m the kind of person if I can mix them and make one spray why not do it. I know Blindside is supposedly Metsulfuron and Sulfentrazone together in one package.

I haven’t personally but you are correct in that Blindside is a mixture of the 2 so yes you be able to mix the two, but maybe you want to target a dosing concentration that is equivalent to Blindside?
Do you use pre-emergent herbicides? I used to have some issue with crabgrass, barnyard grass and goosegrass - I never see them anymore since I started using pre-emergent herbicides about 5 years ago. Of course pre-emergents don’t do anything with nutsedge.

We finished building April of 2021 and put down 24 pallets of zoysia in the backyard and 5’ around all the perimeter of the house, garage, shop and driveway. I was going to seed the rest of the 1-1/2 acre lot with zoysia so I didn’t want to do any pre emergents last fall or this spring. But the seeding didn’t happen because of cost and not being able to secure product. So I just let the common Bermuda come back and will live with that since I can pretty much spray the same chemicals on the zoysia and Bermuda. I will be getting back on my pre emergent schedule now in oct/nov and again in feb/march so hopefully I can get rid of all the weeds. At my old house once I started using pre emergents I hardly used any herbicides, it was a st aug lawn.

I have St Aug...which pre-ems (and when did you apply) did you have your success with?
