Things to not miss doing in Costa Rica.

Ok so my sister sent out the whole family a brochure with about 15 things to do while we are on a family vacation in Costa Rica. Obviously you can't do them all but I need some thoughts/suggestions from some of you on certain things to not miss out on while we are there.
I appreciate any feedback.

Ok. Is there possibly any details you can provide on why?

Because its one of the coolest places to go in costa rica. Google it for yourself. The ride up is very adventurous in itself.

We are going to be doing a lot with 2 kids age 12 and 14 and father who is going to be 75 so we are going to probably have a few things some can and cant do. The main options are you typical excursions like turtles, hiking and rafting ziplining but honestly I've been on these type of vacations before and if you pick something to do and its boring kind of pisses you off cause none of those adventures are free obviously. I'm sure we will rent clubs and play golf one day with the boys and BIL and his son will go fishing. I'm not a fisherman so I'll skip that adventure cause I prefer not to be sea sick like a bitch for a full day to sport fish.

I haven't been in over 20 years so it wouldn't surprise me at all if this is no longer an option. Rent a mountain bike in La Fortuna and ride up the highway to a "water park" that backs up to Arenal volcano. Buy tickets/day pass to the water park in the morning and ride through the back of the park where there are what i've always assumed were horse trails. Follow the trails (lots of uphill, lots of pushing the bikes, crossing barbed wire, lots of mud) until the rumbling of the volcano makes you uncomfortable, then head downhill. We both times ended up on the highway a few miles farther up than where we started. Ride downhill on the highway back to the water park (where you started and bought a pass that morning). There is a swim up bar and go back in for a beer and a swim. Two different trips I've done this and it was fantastic both times. The first time the sky was clear and we watched the lava flow at darkfall from the swim up bar. One of the highlights of two different trips to CR.

Buddy of mine from Slidell owns it.

Thanks might try it out. Specifically looking at the excursions we need to book way before we go is the type of things I need thoughts on.

The last time I went to Costa Rica I did an ATV excursion up/down a mountain..I don't know the name of the company but I would suggest finding someone that does something similar. It was amazing. When we got to the top there was a little restaurant tucked away that we got to eat before heading back down.

The Arenal Observatory Lodge is a great place to stay. It's got an extensive trail system, the best view of the volcano, and is off the beaten path.
In nearby La Fortuna (the town for Arenal) I can recommend Bogarin Trail. It doesn't look like much from the road but it has a good trail system and you will see sloths. And the birds are good as well, we went there for a couple of rare species and got them. And the owner is super nice. He pulled a frog out from under a banana leaf so we could get some photos.
Arenal pairs nicely with a Pacific coast spot. One place my brother really liked as a family spot was Punta Leona above Jaco.
If you drive down to the coast you can stop and see some impressive crocodiles at the Tarcoles river bridge. The mouth of the Tarcoles is a good place for Scarlet Macaws, and they are on the grounds at Punta Leona, and sometimes around Jaco too. A lot more common than they used to be.

When I went to Costa Rica, I didn't go to Monteverde and really with I had. There are not that many in the world. You'll see different vegetation, birds, wildlife, etc.
The Arenal/La Fortuna area also has a lot to see and do. I just couldn't work Monteverde into our schedule because it's fairly hard to get to.

If you're in the La Fortuna area, with the various ages in your party, Proyecto Asis is supposed to be really good and unique.
Another wildlife walk in the area that's really good is the Bogarin Trail. Two brothers who grew up in the area created a small wildlife preserve practically in the city of La Fortuna.

Do you know yet what areas of Costa Rica you'll be going to? It's also super easy to rent a car and drive yourself around in Costa Rica.

The Pacuare Lodge, google it.

La Fortuna was excellent. Lots of activities and things to do. Hiking, zip lining, waterfalls, volcano, hot springs etc…. We are planning to go back soon. Spent 4 days on the coast and much preferred the mountains.

Charter a boat out of Los Suenos resort and have it take you to isla tortuga for the day

Take the 6 hour mistake route that “ looks easy” on Waze from Jaco to Tarcoles through mountains, streams, front yards, up cliffs, down creek beds, through herds of cattle in your 4 wheel drive Toyota Land Cruiser while all the people in your vehicle white knuckle until your brakes fail but you somehow survive and get home at 5 am. If you see a ghost horse and it looks you in the eyes like it knows you will know you did it correctly. Pura Vida !
Oh and enjoy the 3 wait in immigration That takes longer than the flight. That’s a winner. Bureaucracy in CR has LITERALLY ruined my life. Turned it from glory to shite.
