I swear, we deal with this shite EVERY DAY. After giving them a price...."What if I pay cash??". People are fricking stupid.

And typical car buyers are the stupidest I have met.

Which made it easy to make money off them.

Especially in the last 2 years. Stupid people that can't control their "wants" are as much to blame for the current economic environment as FU politicians. In fact, more so, because politicians know people are stupid.

I avoid dealerships like the plague. I always by from individuals and save that 30-40% markup.

I used to love negotiating for a new car, the new system has dumbed it down to where it’s not fun for me anymore but I bought two new vehicles over the last couple of years, for the wife, I told her to find what she wanted and make a deal, she loved it, financed it and paid it off promptly, I bought a new truck a few months ago, was prepared to pay cash for it but to my surprise they were quite negotiable, got the 0% financing with a price I was happy with, life is good, learning to buy a car, house, any significant purchase, is just a life lesson, you don’t always have to get the last drop of blood from the other side, just what makes you happy, besides, you might be doing business again with them in the future

A better idea is to not discount the MSRP by $1,000 and then add some BS protection plan for $1,000 and then say you are giving me a discount.
I'm no accountant but I am better at math than most of you dealers.

I negotiate the price, then write the check. They force you to sit down with their finance manager anyway, just to give a last “frick you” for not borrowing money from them.

sometimes the best reason to pay cash is the knowledge that you are not in debt to anyone.

I bought my last car online. They gave me their price, I came back with a lower but what I thought was a fair offer. I didn't think they would accept since internet deals don't offer much leeway if any on price, but to my surprise they did and I picked it up the next day. Worst part of any deal, is going through the extended warranty process which I didn't want but they make you sit through their presentation anyway while they finalize the paperwork.
I would do it again.

I hear you, and every month when I get ready to pay the note I think “why don’t I just pay this off?” and I have to remember it’s not costing me a cent in interest, and with the stock market the way it is, there’s some really good ways to invest that money

I had to sit through this bullshite for way too long when my wife bought her CRV. It only got worse when we opted for the shortest loan term possible which also meant .9%. Once they knew they weren't going to get much there the extended warranty and service package was pushed hard for like an hour straight.

I'm like dude...it's a fricking Honda. Who in the hell is extending a warranty to 100k on a CRV.

Times must have changed. My grandma used to buy her cars with cash. Well, the last two she had she paid cash. Both times she paid just under sticker price. This was late 80s and then early 2000s, but when she bought the one in the early 2000s she went in and pretty much told the salesman "I want a new car, I don't need one. I am paying cash. I will pay (and she said $500 under the sticker price). If you can't do it at that price I will go elsewhere".

They agreed but at first they tried to get her to trade in the car she was driving. She told them she was keeping it. She got it at the price she wanted and sold her car for $2k more than they were going to give her.

Another thing is we live in a credit world so paying cash does nothing to boost your credit. Credit is like muscle, if you don't use it, you lose it. Keep your credit strong.
you can charge things to 1 credit card and pay it off in full at the end of every month and maintain an over 800 pt credit score with zero other debts.
