Why? Old pics are awesome. I mean, Juneteenth itself is a giant lie, but it be what it be.

Slavery didn’t end in the Indian territories for a few moar years

I agree,, I’m just saying that it’s an important holiday that should be celebrated. It has actual importance and should have the same respect of a holiday like July 4th.

It recognizes our country’s troubled past, and celebrates how far we’ve come. As a former poster mentioned, it seems that recently the “media” has told us that if you don’t know what it is you’re a bigot. The only reason I know about it is because my wife is black and from Texas. I brought it up with her last night about how it was celebrated nationally and she agreed that “Juneteenth” was a mostly Texas thing that caught on nationally bc of a catchy name.

Plus it is subtly anti-white (male specifically). Bonus!

In 1900 it’s likely some of those people were actually slaves, and almost of their parents were so I imagine it was a bigger deal

I wouldn’t be opposed to reparations for all those people pictured. If any are still alive, they deserve some money.

I still don't know what Juneteenth is. But I'm pretty sure it's something about me being a racist.

On the contrary, black culture itself was on the social upswing before our gov. decided it needed "help," i.e., subsidizing. These pictures are a reminder.

This is really interesting. I had no idea that Juneteenth used to be so widely celebrated and by so many.
Me either. Guess that's our white privilege/supremacy I keep hearing about that prevented us from realizing it.

Pay attention to where the massive upswing starts.

Yep.

One key fact that keeps getting ignored is that the poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits every year since 1994. Behavior matters and facts matter, more than the prevailing social visions or political empires built on those visions--Thomas Sowell

It should've been named Proclamation 95 Day.
