Get a battery powered if you do not like dealing with gas.
If you want to keep gas just buy an extra carb.
Not much to a two stroke engine.

Yes! I bought one of those self feeding ones. It sucks and does not self feed. I feel like I have to stop every two minutes and redo the string!!

I bought a straight shaft Murray from Wal Mart about 8 years ago. Changed out the head to one that takes in the double string in 2 sides. I ONLY RUN THE PREMIXED CAN FUEL through it and it has been a great unit! My only issue I ever had was that the hose going to the tank cracked. I ordered a new tank with the hose attached from EBay of $9 and was back weed eating in a few days.

Echo or Stihl with the echo speed feed head and the canned premix gas. If you still have problems, it's your fault.

Twenty years ago, well before battery tech had improved enough to make it an option, gas powered weed eaters were the main reason I went to a yard crew before my budget could comfortably afford it.
The inexplicable and unreasonable amount of anger they would generate in me was must see Saturday morning watching for my kids. They would invite friends over and shite in hopes it would be the quarterly occurrence of me helicoptering a Ryobi into the side of an oak tree.

I use an Echo. My arms vibrate for a couple of hours after use but it runs good.

You know you have to take them in (preferably every winter) and get them serviced? I take my toro mower, Echo weed eater and blower to Tubbs every January. I never have issues starting them. Only use ethanol free gas. Also, take the filter out every couple of uses and knock the dirt out. Sounds like you and your dad didn’t practice preventative maintenance.
My dad has an electric weed eater with two heavy arse batteries. It’s heavier and kind of loud also. And it’s hard to vary the speed on it. I’m not a fan.

Got a Ryobi electric recently. It seems to have more torque than my gas powered. Might want to try electric. Don’t regret my choice.

Cut my own grass. It is therapeutic. Until weed eater busts my azz for something or other. Have experienced great satisfaction in past from tossing that mofo in the garbage and seeing it stick out of top of can.

Carburetors are less than $30 on Amazon. I buy a second one and can swap them in less than 10 minutes. Super easy to clean.
The carb is almost always the issue.

After 2 years, if you don’t take it apart and clean it and start using some carb spray, they are such a pain in the arse

Spend the money and buy a Stihl.

Dude...one of the best things i ever did was replace my last old style weed whacker w a walk behind trimmer mower, like this one. Of course, now i see you can hardly get one w/o spending $500. Thanks you know who...

Get a Stihl straight shaft trimmer, properly mix non ethanol fuel, fill fuel tank, hit primer bulb 3-5 times, turn choke on, pull cord 1-2 times, allow to get warm once started, run the piss out of Stihl weed eater. When you are done turn it off and repeat the process again in a week or two. I also recommend taking some needle nose pliers and removing the spark arrestor/mesh screen from the muffler. If you need to restring it pull about 10 arm lengths of .105 trimmer string out of a roll, cut in two, and wrap around the spool the opposite direction you inserted it. Don’t baby a Stihl either, the harder you run it the better it will run.

Stop buying cheap weed eaters. Also, like any other machine it requires maintenance.

I weed eat once or twice a year. The rest of the time I use round up or some other weed / grass killer.

Here's a tip, mow once, then instead of weed eating, spray glyphosate (round up) everywhere you would have. No more weed eating.
