I feel if your kid is in travel ball and you routinely take off for that crap, it warrants dismissal.

Working 2-3 days a week the entire summer is absolute nonsense and I am shocked sone employers put up with it.

I'm pretty sure I know one was fired for it but she tried to post on FB she was "transitioning". She worked there for 15 years and did nothing but run after baseball and cheerleading crap.

We've got a lot of smart professionals here, I suspect we could gather up some good advice for young Mingo to get noticed by his superiors so he's not getting regularly outshined by Susan, who is currently taking her kids to lax practice.

Yeah.

Who says im contributing nothing here? I gave the Hooters girl a $20 tip. That money is probably going to her 'contributing to the continuation of the species and trying to raise a valuable member of society'
And what of your co-worker's kid at that time? That's the trade-off we're talking about, right? We're getting into the woods of net value to society here, and whether your service in passing value to the hooters girl (and taking her time from serving someone else) makes up for the added expense on your co-worker for having to make child care arrangements.

I get that it's not "fair", but there's kind of an unwritten societal contract about child care, isn't there? I'll pick up your slack when I can with the expectation that you will do the same for me. If someone abuses that, they would abuse anything. But yes, children are a better excuse than most, and for good reason IMO. The next generation is the reason we work in the first place.

Ah, feeling powerless to curtail the excesses of a subordinate who has the favor of higher ups is a genuine tough spot.

But this board is a wealth of experience, Mingo, just ask for help and I'm sure you'll get it

most kid excuses are deemed legitimate/excused.

Well yeah, why wouldn't they be?

I think Jones taking off at 2 to help put some Hooter's waitress through school is legitimate as well.

How do I get fat, sloppy, and lazy, left by my wife, have a shitty dead end job, and budding alcoholism?

You and others should have a ton of insight into that. Learn me up

Reading all these comments reminds of something similar that happened to me.

At my job we are scheduled to work a two full weekends a month. At the start of the month a coworker had asked to switch weekends for their kids tournament and I had already had plans and told them I could not. Well come that date of their kids tournament they conveniently called in sick all weekend and guess who ended up covering their shift.

You're scared of her or something? Sounds like you're letting the inmates run the asylum.

It's like you live in another dimension where words don't mean the same thing.

I have no idea why you are so upset.
