Power supplies in much of the US and part of Canada will be stretched, with demand growing again after two years of pandemic disruptions, according to an annual report. It’s among the most dire assessments yet from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, a regulatory body that oversees grid stability.

“It’s a pretty sobering report, and it’s clear the risks are spreading,” John Moura, director of reliability assessment and performance analysis, said in a press briefing. “I certainly do think it's our most cautionary tale here.”

“The pace of our grid transformation is out of sync” with the physical realities of the existing power network, Moura said.

Supply-chain snags, meanwhile, are delaying Southwest solar projects and Texas transmission lines, while coal plants are having trouble obtaining fuel amid increased exports. And power grids face a growing threat of cyberattacks because of US support for Ukraine following the Russian invasion, according to NERC.

Early retirement of fossil fuel plants is an issue in other parts of the US as well. The coal and natural gas plants that continue to operate are running harder, and NERC expects them to break down more often, Moura said. The gas-fired plants in Texas that shut unexpectedly late last week during a spring heat wave underscore that risk, he said.

If you can't run your power plant 24/7, then maybe you should be forced to sell to another company that is going to actually keep up the plant and have backup equipment on standby so we aren't without electricity.
You run a fricking monopoly, and have no competition. That's the problem. There's no consequences when they cant' supply power to their customers. It's not like i can switch power companies.

It'll probably be in mostly liberal areas, which is fine. They voted for the a-hole, they deserve to pay the consequences.

Louisiana's two largest cities are powered by Nukes. And I think they just renewed the permit for Riverbend Station.

So unless a million people move to Louisiana, most of the posters on this board will be okay. Especially given how many homes in south Louisiana have at least a portable generator to handle short periods without power.

It’s fine though because we’re not suffering from Mean Tweets.

I assume this will not affect my state of Texas as it's a Red state from top to bottom. Which is good news.

Being connected to MISO, if there is a shortfall in the upper Midwest (which is the issue) then all of MISO could get to a condition requiring rolling blackouts

The only way to convince blue states to not be blue is if they start to suffer.

I hate it for all the good people that live in those states, because there are some good ones, but it must be done.

I’m confused… because I remember the media and Facebook experts telling me that Texas is the only state with a shitty grid, and demanding that we interconnect with everyone else so the rest of the country could save us.

Maybe I heard that wrong.

The only way to fix this is for everyone to buy an EV. Only then can we all live in a green utopia.
