Okay I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with some of what I see online being said about this game, and at first I understood it and even was part of it because it was a new open world FromSoft game. That also compounds with another thing about the game and thats that it really really drops off a cliff about 2/3 of the way through, and I think many people haven’t gotten there yet or are just ignoring it. The game has a significant and steep decline that starts up when you arrive at what I’d say is the last thirdish or maybe quarter. I don’t wanna be specific with spoilers in case anyone reads this and hasnt gotten there but it’s the point where the game begins to get much more linear and on rails. There’s a lot to love about Elden Ring and the top of that list is what From was able to somehow pull off in terms of the actual open world and imo it redefines how they should be. However, if I’m being honest I have no desire to ever replay it again. Bloodborne still is and always will be FromSofts best title. Sekiro and Dark Souls 1&3 are also better games in most ways than Elden Ring.

I didn’t want to give myself a brain aneurism or break multiple controllers so I didn’t even bother buying it.

Those kinds of games make me rage like none other

I agree that there are some relatively weak areas toward the end of the game, but there is also an excellent optional hidden area.

Bloodborne is better, but I'd rather have both than choose just one.

One good thing about Elden Ring becoming so popular is that From will now have basically unlimited money to do whatever they want next.

I think a lot of the hype comes from the fact that most game reviewing organizations picked someone to review the game that was already a huge fan of FromSoft and the Souls-like genre in general. Which makes sense, as you're going to get a shite review from someone who isn't capable of playing the game.

But it also means that your review scores are going to be heavily skewed by people getting the exact fix they were looking for when they booted up the game, even if many gamers wouldn't exactly get into it. I think it also caused them to overlook flaws in the game and write them off as irrelevant, just because they didn't affect the core gameplay loop they were there for.

That’s a terrible use of that meme. I basically wrote a single paragraph explaining my position on something. More than that, a position on something that is actually worth talking about. The obscene 10/10 praise of Elden Ring like it’s some perfect piece of art that is beyond any criticism is annoying as hell. The game has major problems, and it’s also annoying to have to frame anything bad you wanna say about it as “I like Elden ring so don’t burn my house down but….”

One thing that I think is a big positive in the games favor and future replay value/DLC is most of what I consider the biggest problems with the game actually can be if not completely fixed by patches then heavily mitigated. The one thing that I feel kinda like shite bag complaining about just considering how massive the amount of content the game offers is, but the absolutely OBSCENE re skins and re used enemies and bosses and bossed later as regular enemies or sometimes just throw two together for shits and giggles is unacceptable.

After I took some time to think, ER is my 3rd favorite FromSoft game. Sekiro is my favorite given how unique of an experience it is, so it's hard to compare to ER. But second on my list is Dark Souls 3 - I think FromSoft perfected their linear format with Dark Souls 3 (and arguably Bloodborne). I liked what ER was going for, but a lot of the traveling at times felt like padding, since you were literally just riding on your horse and killing enemies. If FromSoft makes an ER 2, I hope it's more in the vein of DS3. Also, I have a few major gripes with ER:

-Not having mimics made the chest-opening experience not as dramatic and fun as Dark Souls. Sure, Mimics may be party poopers to some, but I like the adrenaline rush of when I am about to open a chest, only to see the chest pulsating like an animal would. Always loved those situations in Souls games weirdly enough.

-Lack of illusory walls outside of mini-dungeons compared to previous Souls games was kind of surprising, especially given the vastness of the game. Maybe FromSoft figured it was unnecessary to have them all over the open world, but I feel like that would have further added to the experience. Seems like a missed opportunity if you ask me.

-The music was just so blah. I know they used different composers than Motoi Sakuraba this time around (who imo has also been very blah as of late), but nothing really stood out here like it did in past FromSoft games.

It’s sad to see someone struggle so mightily with the English language

I absolutely couldn’t care less about structuring proper paragraph and sentence structure in every post on Tigetdroppings. I generally just get what I want to say out there. Sorry you’re so inundated with Elden Ring fan disease you couldn’t even cough up a legitimate rebuttal.

Didn’t play it because I suck at souls games but I’m in a gaming group on Fb that has had 30 posts a day about it since it came out so I’m pretty ready for the hype to die down

Where are you saying it drops off a cliff? If anything, it got more enjoyable as the game progressed to me.

I don't know what to tell you other than the fact that I vehemently disagree.

Tough to rebut a post that reads like a 3 year old wrote it.

This is quite the melt over a video game

You're an arse if you post shite and don't bother to use minimum formatting to make it readable. It's annoying to read posts like that. Like the message board version of dude who shows up to a game tournament without bathing for the past week.

I’m not melting…I don’t care really that people like the game. Hell I LIKE THE GAME. That’s why the discourse around this game is still so poison right now. The game is good. It’s not great. Not even close. I respect that FromSoft took big swings here and as should be expected some landed and others didn’t. Calling this game a 10/10 masterpiece is a joke though.

There’s just some simple truths about this game a certain segment of the player base refuses to even acknowledge. It’s not a masterpiece. It does push some groundbreaking area in terms of how to design an open world and that should be respected. However, I don’t see how it can even be argued that Elden Ring in its current state is by the far the least desirable FromSoft game to consider replay value for.

Are you speaking in terms of the story or the scaling and types of enemies? I’m speaking more towards the latter and if you’ve reached the part I’m taking about you’ll know it. The story in itself is a whole separate bag of worms .

Why do you vehemently disagree though. Do you even know? What specifically makes Elden ring better than Bloodborne or Sekiro. Because other than the cool open world and sheer insane amount of things to do (which has a thinly veiled veneer that peels back slowly as you realize a good portion of it is recycled content) I don’t see a single thing that makes it better. Not the combat for damn sure and not the story for damn sure either.

The later areas were some of the most memorable. The only area that seemed bland to me was the Mountaintops of Giants, but it had one of the best bosses. I’m finishing my second playthrough, and I don’t know what you’re talking about.
