In Florida, servers make a minimum server wage plus tips.
Is OK different? I doubt it.
Eta: OK has a server minimum wage.
Lol, just as I thought.

My brother the psychologist had an interesting explanation on low job retention. Young people today were raised with self esteem promotion....participation trophies, 'A' for effort, etc. When you start a job there's this thing called 'the boss'.
The boss is irritating because he keeps telling you what to do. And if you do something wrong he criticizes you. Who needs that shite. I quit.

The simple answer is that employers are not providing a good enough package to entice employer to come and stay.
Package includes pay, benefits, time off, work environment, etc.
I do think more and more of the lower skill class is doing gig work... both formal (driving for door dash, etc) and informal (taking daily cash jobs).

My wife, for some ungodly reason, wanted Taco Bell the other night around 10 pm. Off I went.
This Taco Bell always has, from about 8 pm to midnight, a line of cars out to the street, that moves very slowly. That night was no exception.
From the time i pulled into the line, to the time I left the drive thru window with my order... 27 minutes.
When I was waiting at the window, it appeared the store had two employees working. Both were cursing each other out. I don't know the inner workings of the Taco Bell operations manual, but I would assume it calls for more than two employees.
Given the line of cars every night that I see... I have to assume what I observed was a nightly occurance.
Yet... every night... line of cars.
So Taco Bell might be willing to throw another dollar an hour at a potential third worker / fourth worker. But what incentive do they have to take major steps to fix the problem?
Clearly, their customer base has decided to continue going there, despite these "issues".

What would employers breaking look like?
Earnings are up all over the major public traded corporations.
They have money to throw at employees if they chose to do so.
But that would hurt their earnings a bit in the short term, which is no way for execs to max out their stock incentives.
Take the restaurant industry. If everyone said F this I'm going to just eat at home, and restaurant earnings started dropping, the execs would do what needs to be done to get people back into the restaurants, which means improving the experience. And if they need to pay higher wages to do so, they would.
But as long as companies continue to make tons of money, don't expect that.

the store next to mine can't keep employees.
he might have a slightly different issue adding to his problems because he's running a CBD store, but i honestly think it's folks that get hired and then no-show because the unemployment folks consider that "good faith".
there's been no follow up from the unemployment folks as to why they didn't stay.
i've only had 3 people come in asking for a job and 2 of them had experience that was in line to be possibly useful, but in all the cases, they weren't all that serious about actually maintaining a job.

I think it's a lot of this, especially for retail/fast food. Businesses have reduced hours if they can't get enough employees to cover their prior operating hours. Service has definitely been reduced - many local fast food places still keep their dining rooms closed, McDonald's does not staff their interior registers and have signs up telling people to use the kiosks instead. Sit down restaurants often only have half of their tables operating because they don't have enough cooks/waitstaff to fully operate.
You don't want to be a jerk to the people who ARE working so you let slow service slide, you wait longer for a table, you show up during the new reduced hours... Until it's a big enough nuisance that people stop spending money in those places, business owners are doing the financially smart thing by getting by with less labor.

How are we still doing this?
Enhanced UI is gone.
Eviction ban is gone.
What are stupid shite are we doing? Maybe employers are not paying enough. Which is a damn bad sign for inflation.

I've got some kf the highest starting pay for a restaurant in town and I had one application in 4 weeks for my kitchen. The girls are making crazy money and I'm doing well with that. No clue where everyone else is at

Because they got used to living on less. Near the bottom you have to put a lot of work in to raise your standard of living just a little over that of 100% leech. That disincentive got a lot worse with the turnip, but it's been there for decades and people just adjusted to it.

If we ended welfare people would go back to work. Its hard for businesses to compete with the money printing federal government.
But ending that program would result in more tax payers and less tax takers so the budget would be better.
And the extra money we save from having to pay leaches to sit on their asses could be used for new shiny prisons, to house the people who dont want to work and would rather steal stuff.
Its a win\win\win.

If I ever get back in tourism, I'll hire J-1 Bulgarians.
They are so far superior to their American college student counterparts.

I'd be in favor of eliminating H-1B visas entirely, at least for now. Employers have been using these to suppress American wages for years.
