The FIFA video game will be disappearing after the maker failed to strike a new licensing deal with world soccer's governing body.

Instead, EA Sports FC will be introduced from 2023 after the company creates the final game in partnership with FIFA later this year.

EA has been producing a FIFA game for around three decades and its fond association with fans worldwide helped the Zurich-based organization's brand when it was tarnished amid a wave of arrests of soccer officials in 2015.

For many, FIFA means a game rather than a sports politics institution. Now FIFA will have to search for new video gaming opportunities beyond EA.

"We're thankful for our many years of great partnership with FIFA," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said. "The future of global football is very bright, and fandom around the world has never been stronger. We have an incredible opportunity to put EA SPORTS FC at the heart of the sport, and to bring even more innovative and authentic experiences to the growing football audience."

RIP FIFA EA Video Game
I get excited to see the letters "RIP" with any EA property, but it's nothing more than a name change. FIFA wanted twice the licensing fee and to also be able to put their name on other developers' games/properties. EA said thanks but no thanks.

Since team/league licensing is done with EA directly nothing changes on that front. Aside from the World Cup being scrapped the game's the same.

The replacement name sucks though.

Go see efootball2022 for reference of what the alternative is. Back when it was PES it had potential. That potential has been lost.

frick I’ve literally avoided buying the past couple years cuz I was waiting on the World Cup centric version that’d be released this year right before the WC. And now they’re not even going to have intl teams much less all the WC squads? shite

I think Covid wrecked their team. 2020 was still playable, but 2021 was merely a roster update. 2022 is a nightmare. They didn’t have the team licenses, but you played because the gameplay was good, and the community could mod in whatever league you wanted.

This has been known for awhile. FIFA wanted like a billion dollars for the name and EA laughed them out of the room.

It takes a lot to make EA look like the reasonable ones but FIFA managed to do it.

The international clubs will still be in there. There just won't be a World Cup mode.

FWIW the current deal ends next summer, so there will be Qatar 2022 content added to FIFA 23 in the fall

I remember getting the original FIFA international soccer on SNES. It must have been just as the world cup was going on in 94 because I remember wanting to play as some of the teams I had watched.

A must was turning fouls off (and offsides?) so you could "tackle" people by mashing the X button.

I miss the standalone World Cup games. The 2002 version on the PS2 was one of the best ever. And who could forget the Men in Blazers providing the background audio for the 2014 version

FIFA World Cup 2006 is the game that got me into soccer. We probably played at least 2 hours a day for a year or so in college.

You could create/edit players in the 2006 WC game so I created a US team that could exist if soccer was the dominant sport. I think I had Jason Seahorn in goal and Micheal Vick as the main striker. I think I had LeBron as a holding midfielder.

I used a lot of their real ratings from the various games in their real sport so Vick would have the same speed an agility in FIFA as he did in madden for example.

I was a dork.

This is an incredible amount of dedication.

FIFA 94 on the Genesis was the GOAT.......even with the cheats.

Stand alone.....FIFA 1998 Road to the World Cup was the shite. I used to smoke Boom's arse on a regular basis.

I use to slide tackle the goalie like 5 times in a row so I could play with half the players against the computers back in the day. Still crushed with Cobi Jones.
