When you are my age (about to hit 50) the correct answer is a nice town that is close to the city. Examples include New Braunfels/Canyon Lake/Gruene for Austin/San Antonio and Conroe/Bryan-College Station/Magnolia for Houston. Never lived in Dallas but I'm sure there are some great towns nearby.
The older I get the more I complain about the traffic/summers. I'm already bitching about the 90 degree weather here in Houston...God I miss summers in Montana (and that was 25 years ago)
Meh. I'm 60 and I have never complained about the heat. I hate the cold. I also like the city. I live in a suburb, work there, don't leave it mostly. But I can go to an Astros game anytime I want. I went to see Hamilton a few months ago and am planning on seeing Jersey Boys. We have a lot of cool and unique restaurants and bars in town that are fun to visit once or twice a month. I can think of many concert venues and tons of places to hear whatever kind of live music you want I can take direct flights to almost anywhere in the world. But maybe you just want to sit on your porch. That's not the retirement I want, when I decide to do so.
I grew up in BFE N. La and have no desire to ever live in BFE again. For the record, Amarillo was barely a step up from there.
Basically, so many complaining about Dallas and Houston, but where do they live? Baton Rouge? New Orleans? Those certainly aren't better.

Houston is not all that great. The only people who love it are people from there. The whole Dallas vs Houston thing is stupid too. They’re both never ending sprawls. People are boring. No culture. The shopping centers are all very similar. Traffic forces you to take toll roads which rack up quickly costing a fortune. The music scene is meh. So many places around Houston try so hard to be cajun it’s annoying. I will add that The Woodlands is a nice suburb. I don’t have anything bad to say about it.
New Braunfels is my personal favorite city. I also like Brenham, Decatur, Paris, Huntsville, Lindale and Tyler.
If I have to be tied to a major metro I’m going with San Antonio and living on the north or northwest region of it. Seems a little less cosmopolitan like the other metros and access to the outdoors is solid.

Overall this thread is dumb cause it’s full of personal preferences and prejudices.
Different people like different things. Different people are in different stages of life. One size fits all advice is rarely good.

To each their own I guess. The heat in the South is the pit of misery to me. It already sucks at the beginning of May. It will be like this until November now.

Find a pool or some A/C, cold fricking sucks and doesn’t relent. I spent 20+ years in that horseshite weather and outside of a “White Christmas” I can deal with having swamp arse for five months.

Bro, this site is the single most concentrated source of expertise in the entire world, probably even the universe. On every topic known to mankind. Unless someone specifies that “just my opinion but….” you are to receive said info as unadulterated expert advice, and that’s that.

Amarillo > Lubbock imo unless you're a college student

If we're naming random places I'm gonna give a shout out to Beeville :D

It’s a good thing I’m listing my own opinion and not listing what I think other people like. I could give a two shits what places people think are cool.
I’m not a sheep. I like what I like and do what I want.
