Even worse, G Pickens and Skyy Moore were both available at 49 when we reached for a DB that could have been drafted later. A really really bad move for Olave.

are they even senior captains though?

You could say that about all of this.
We invested a lot of draft capital in Olave. If he produces in his first two-three years, similar to Thomas... it will be worth it.
You are doing it again. You are conflating two different things.
* how you navigate the draft, and whether or not you overpay
and
* whether the player you select was worthy of the position you draft him
These are two different things and should be judged separately. Obviously, both are important.
It is my opinion that that Saints may have slightly overpaid to get to 11...but not enough to be critical. So, the cost of drafting Olave isn't the issue.
It is also my opinion that the right move was to draft Jameson Williams. Hopefully, I'm wrong about that. But, if I'm right, it won't be the cost to get to 11 that was th problem...it will be the pick we made.

i'll slightly agree to this with the huge pending asterisk that we win a lot of games next year and don't end up with a top 15 selection. That would hurt big time.

I felt there were other WRs left that would have been fine on our team that we could have gotten at 16, but I'll give the front office the benefit of the doubt.

The extra 1st and 2nd sucks, but one of the thirds was compensatory and the 4th, meh.

I will disagree with this. I think all the Tier1 WRs would have been gone by 16. Olave is certainly a Tier1 WR

Draft history tells us there will likely be multiple guys that out play Olave, who will be taken far behind him.
Which makes this whole bounty kind of silly. Trading away picks makes you less likely to find that guy

That doesn’t make it any better lol

Its what I tell myself to feel better. Leave me alone.
But, you are right. Its a haul worthy of a surefire multiyear all pro. Deep playoff runs for the next 3-4 years will make me forget about it though.

It was bad passing on Moore even after taking Olave.

The haul is not that dissimilar to what the Saints paid for Ricky Williams
Not even close. You accounting for th e trades in not accurate when making that comparison.

It's a reach to say that this is what they gave up for Olave, maybe not a big reach, but a reach. When the move was made to trade for two firsts it was for two first round picks, not specifically for Olave though it put us in position to make a move for Olave.
So it's either the following for Olave
2022 1st
2022 3rd
2022 4th
Or it's the Following for Olave, Penning, and Jackson. Three players.
2022 1st
2022 3rd
2022 4th
2022 7th
2023 1st
2024 2nd
Williams was a trade for 1 player.
1999 1st
1999 3rd
1999 4th
1999 5th
1999 6th
1999 7th
2000 1st
2000 3rd

That's a 3rd issue...whether it made sense big picture strategy wise to make a trade at all given the likelihood of 2023 being a high pick.
But, it shouldn't affect your assessment on whether we paid too much to move up to 11...nor should it affect your assessment whether Olave was a good pick at #11.
But, you are right that we may have undervalued our '23 pick by overestimating our team.

Like I said, mental gymnastics
You know the Saints already owned a 1st round pick, right? Like, before any trade was made? And that pick moved back one spot after they made a trade. Right?
They didn’t trade for two firsts. They already had one

I would consider Moore even with Olave. I always wanted two WRs in this draft.

Lucky we still have resources to go get a qb capable of that
Oh… wait…

If he turns into a legit #1B that’s easily worth it.
WRs are starting to become the hottest commodities right behind QBs. It’s almost like if you don’t have two #1s you’re already behind the 8 ball.
Also, we’ve been clamoring for the flashy 1st round WR pick for years, we finally get it, and this is the reaction? LOL

You could say this same line for every time any team has ever traded up. This same logic would also say that teams should trade back every single pick. Draft can be a crapshoot, but sometimes you have to trust your draft grades and target the players you like. Saints needed a guy that will come in day one and be a solid #2 opposite Thomas, not sure if they would've gotten that with any of the later picks.

You do know the Saints had 18th pick to begin with, right? It was free
You realize only one selection can be made with one pick though right? So if the Saints realized they absolutely needed a receiver (given the trades to get a second first and to move up to 11 and get Olave) I think it's safe to say that they'd draft a receiver at 18 if they don't trade. Yea they could have selected penning then but all of their actions point to the fact that they thought they needed a receiver. But either way. They made two selections with that initial trade so the second first round selection has to be added. They didn't just give up all of that for Olave. They gave up all of that to add a second first which they used to draft a tackle and move up for Olave.

Everyone says this but seems to forget when we are bitching about other holes on the roster that you could haves filled with all those other draft picks
