one thing folks aren't really discussing here is that we got another year of a first round player out of the deal

we also got the optionality of a fifth year on rookie contract for both, which adds flexibility to the salary cap

What? We essentially dealt our next 1st (and a lot) for this pick. Is the CBA changing next year or something?

What is a "Standard" 3rd?

Are non-comp late 3rds non-standard, now?

A pick landing from 65-96 has more value than a pick from 97-?. In this instance it was picks #98 and #101.

That is all I was saying. You are just arguing to argue. Walk way from the computer.

Olave must’ve really been the guy they wanted, because even if he wasn’t there at 16, you probably could’ve gotten equal value.

I think Loomis panicked.

There are rumblings 4 teams got their WR1

Falcons, Jets, Saints, and Lions.

I think that’s quite likely.

For all the expectations of CGM, he’s stil a question mark, health-wise. And he’s not getting any younger.

To get back to OP, if Olave was our WR1 in terms of the draft, we need him to be a WR1 in terms of the NFL. Like Les said, multiple pro-bowls and all-pro teams.

Yeah but we got Penning also. We only had #18 to begin with and traded away that haul for 2 firsts... I'm saying the whole trade has to be considered and Penning is part of that trade now too.
We already had the 1st that we used on Penning.

Still a 3rd rounder. Because it is late in the 3rd round does not make it "not a 3rd rounder."

You can't include Penning in this. The thing is that swapping first round picks was part of the trade. No big deal, they stepped back from 18 to 19 and still got Penning so that is a wash. But you absolutely must include the other picks it took to get the 16th pick and then what it took to move up to 11.

I don't know that I really agree with this. This is just a guess. On the surface you are correct but I would bet that in NFL circles when GM's are discussing trades that it is valued differently each year depending on the strength of that years draft.

Ooof

Yes the totality of it all is rather irritating

I honestly thought they were moving up to get Jameson Williams when that happened I wasn't on the phone/internet at the moment

Goes to show you how much the staff thought we needed help at receiver funny how we didn't really address that until now

I've said multiple times on here, that I much preferred Jameson Williams. If we look back wishing we had drafted Williams over Olave, that should be the story...not that we spent too much to get the pick.

Look at what Detroit was able to do 1 pick later. I'm good with Olave or Williams, but Detroit jumped 20 spots and we only jumped 5. We got raped on the 2nd trade comparatively.

The haul is not that dissimilar to what the Saints paid for Ricky Williams

You're getting DVd to oblivion, but you're not wrong. That's a hell of a haul for one player

People are fine setting the bar low because we drafted for need.

If we win a Super Bowl THIS season because Olave was NFL ready I would Argue you can justify any move.

Otherwise he needs to be more than a complementary WR. He needs to be elite in his own right.

That's almost as bad as Davenport!
