Selling my boat to out of state buyer...

I've never sold to an out of state buyer before so a litle nervous...Just want to be sure I am not gonna get scammed as the guy is located in Hawaii. We have facetimed and traded messages via messenger and text as well.
The plan is for the guy to wire the money to a new bank account I setup, which has about a $50 balance, and then he has a shipping company (UShip) to pick it up.
Any advice on thinking through anything that could be shady in these types of deals? I know once the boat leaves the driveway, I will never see it again so trying to take every precaution to get this right.

All of it sounds shady. Out of state and buying site unseen. Wired money. Shipping company picking it up. The only way I'm doing the deal is if I'm counting the cash while he hooks it up to his truck.

Someone in Hawaii buying a boat from someone in the southeast US is pretty shady. How many times have you heard of someone from here buying a boat from across an ocean?

Shipped from the west coast on another bigger boat.
From like 5k to 15k for something 23-35 feet alone.
Add having it moved across country.
This makes no sense.
Unless you can bulk ship stuff it is expensive as hell to get a boat out there.

That's a scam more than likely. I've seen it in the equipment business. Customer pays via wire out of a hacked account. Real person disputes and the money is taken back.
Sell the boat locally even if it's less money, the stress ain't worth it.

I was told it would be picked up in Mandeville then shipped to San Diego and then to Hawaii.

It's a scam.
Make sure you have money in your hand before the boat leaves. Its that simple. But there will be no money in your hands.
If your boat were so special a guy from hawiiwii just had to have it, it would be special enough for him to come see it and work a deal.

What kind of boat is it that makes it worth all that to the buyer?? I'm shopping for boats and am second guessing if I should drive 5 hours for one. Much less buying sight unseen and shipping it.

Solid boat. Probably would cost $10k to ship that to Hawaii. You either have it priced way too low or something might be sketchy with the dude.

While I agree it sounds shady I did sell my last boat to a buyer overseas in Dubai. I was very skeptical about the whole deal and never believed it would take place. I took payment through Paypal and he gave ample time for the funds to clear and be transferred from my Paypal to another account. It was cheaper for him to buy my boat and trailer have a hotshot driver from Miami pick it up, then drive to Georgia where he had purchased two Honda 225's for the boat. They loaded the crated motors inside the boat and put it all in a shipping container to send to Dubai. I typed all that to say, if you can secure the funds and have the buyer wait until you are satisfied then it may not be a scam.
I believe it cost the buyer $5K to have the shipping container shipped to Dubai, but this was at least 8 years ago so it would be probably 3 or 4 times that now. That alone it seems would make it cheaper for him to buy local.

Talk to your bank. Ask about the transfer. Make sure once the money is wired, nothing can go wrong.

Nothing should be picked up until your bank has given you written clearance that the check has not just been accepted, but has cleared back with the originating bank.
