How is kick 6 not on this list? It took Bama out of the title game and vaulted their hated rivals into it.
Oh no. I had to wait all of two years to see my team win the title again.
OP’s list is better because he considers that loses like WVU’s were the program blowing a once in a lifetime chance.

Really surprised LSU vs Tenn 2001 isn’t on there.
I'm pretty sure that doesn't get mentioned because it is widely accepted that Miami would have steamrolled them. I am in this camp.

Plus the fact that they won a national title 3 years prior. It's also widely accepted that Oklahoma State would've been steamrolled by LSU in 2011, yet their loss at Iowa State is universally ranked higher on the pain index due to both their lack of a national title and the fact that it was a generational season for them.

Oh man, I still can't believe this one. Everything that needed to go right for LSU just happened to go right. You almost never see that these days.
RichRod likely stays at WVU and doesn't take the Michigan job, maybe Les Miles does? I always wonder what may have happened to the landscape if this game had gone the way it was supposed to.

This isn’t as notable as some others on that list, but it will always be the ‘06 SEC Championship Game for me. If Arkansas had won that game, it would have drastically altered the perception of the program moving forward.

Especially had y'all also beaten us the week before. You would've played for a national title against an Ohio State team that Florida demolished.

I've always thought Herbstreit's report was accurate and Pitt upsetting WVU was the curveball that prevented it from happening.
The domino effect from that game is the greatest "what if" in recent college football history.

10. Boise State 31 @ Nevada 34 (2010)
Didn't cost Boise a spot in the title game, but probably the most devastating non-national title aspirations-ruining loss a program can endure. It cost them a spot in the Rose Bowl, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a mid-major program. They were the most hyped mid-major team ever, ranked in the top 5 in both polls wire-to-wire (top 3 for a majority) and losing only one starter from the Fiesta Bowl-winning team of the previous season. They blew a 24-7 lead and Brotzman famously missed 2 sub-30 field goals, the first coming immediately after Kellen Moore threw a Heisman-esque pass to Titus Young at the end of regulation. They fell all the way to the Maaco Bowl.
TCU still plays in the Rose Bowl instead. They were ahead in the BCS.

Me too my friend. Sucked, but at least we're finally number 1 at something.

3. Oklahoma State 31 @ Iowa State 37 2OT (2011)
Oklahoma State was 10-0 and ranked #2 in the BCS when they traveled to Ames to take on 5-4, 28-point underdog Iowa State. The morning of the game, a plane crash occurred that killed Oklahoma State women's basketball coaches Kurt Budke and Miranda Serna. Despite Oklahoma State holding a 24-7 lead in the third quarter, the Cowboys didn't seem as sharp as they had been all season, and the Cyclones came back. With the game tied at 24, Quinn Sharp attempted a 37-yard field goal that would've given Oklahoma State the lead with just over a minute remaining. It passed directly over the upright and was controversially ruled no good. The Cowboys lost in double overtime.
If the ball passed directly over the upright, how exactly was it "controversially ruled no good"?
What's controversial about that? What am I missing here?

I think the football can pass over the top of the goalpost if none of the ball passes outside the post.

I actually felt bad for WVU that night. Losing a game like that might make me quit football.

Michigan State upsetting #1 ranked Ohio State. That Ohio State team was loaded. We even beat Michigan that year. fricking Saban...

Should have one of FSU’s losses to Miami on there. Either ‘87, ‘91 or ‘92. Change three heartbreaking plays in the Miami series, FSU doesn’t slip out of the gate in ‘89, and it changes things dramatically.
But FSU under Bowden had a habit of fricking up when the pressure was on. They would beat the Cowboys by three touchdowns in a bowl game, though, if the national championship wasn’t on the line.

This is mostly true. WVU isn't an elite program but they played for a national championship in 88, had an outside shot in 93 (if WVU would have dominated Florida like Florida dominated them in the Sugar Bowl the AP poll and Coaches poll would probably have crowned WVU because FSU and Nebraska game was 18-16 FSU), and also in 2007 was another missed opportunity.
So not quite once in a lifetime. More like once every 15 years or so since 1980. Nehlen changed the WVU football program. They are a solid tier 2 program in college football. NIL might knock them down though. Seems like college football is going NFL lite.

Ogletree returning that blocked FG had me convinced it was time.
We were watching that game at my friend's house and when Ogletree ran that blocked FG back I was strutting around his living room and yelling out "WOOOOOOOS!" like I was Flair on crack.
Then the rest of the game happened.

I still recall sitting there, dumbfounded, in the endzone where Conley fell short and I just couldn't think or move. I wasn't mad in the slightest, just numb.
The back and forth momemtum and lead changes in that game were unreal.
Not sure exactly what time the game wrapped up, but it was early evening. I was so exhausted by the time it was over that I just went to bed.

I’m an LSU fan, was cheering for Ohio State in 2002 National Championship, but I was depressed for Miami. That is #1 most depressing loss I’ve ever seen.
