They aren’t 14, and he was more like 350. His muscles just weren’t up to his mass at that young age. The ride operators were absolutely 100% at fault and not that young man. I hope they find the murderer that was responsible for modifying that seat.

We lost a great young man from my high school with a good academic record that was going to have a full ride to play for U of Tennessee to an accidental drowning that a more mature and experienced person might have avoided, but he was only 18. We aren’t talking about a college player here, young men in high school are still working on their muscle development. Sad to see such a young life of promise (he was a straight A student) cut short.

The ol "modify the safety features" trick.
Works fine until someone is killed.
Then it's all over for everyone.

I have done a lot of machine guarding cases in my career and probably 50% of the injuries or deaths were a direct result of modified interlocked guards to speed production time.

So many times someone thinks safe is "too safe" and endeavors to "fix" the problem in the name of a dollar. Burning the guilty party to the ground financially is "good" but it will never bring someone back from the dead or regrow their arm.

His parents probably contributed greatly to his being overweight.

Yes and his parents also contributed to him being on that ride. The Dad gave an interview the day after the tragedy and he said that his son was not allowed on any ride at the park and he wondered why his son was allowed on this particular ride. So Dad, he wasn’t allowed on any ride because he was too big, so why did YOU not question why he was allowed on this ride.

Uh yes, every pro lineman is morbidly obese, that is literally a qualification for being a pro lineman

Is OWA in Alabama similar to this ICON park?

ICON is an outdoor mall with a few attractions that you pay for each ride. OWA is a traditional theme park with an admission.

His seat had been adjusted to enable a gap 6-7 inches wide and still register as being fastened securely

Welp, Icon Park bout to pay his family bigly.

How fricking stupid/greedy do you have to be to bypass the safety measures on a theme park ride and still allow guests to ride?

It still doesn’t make a lot of sense. The seats are angle back. It would be very hard to shootout the front. I just keep thinking back to what he was doing with his feet on the way down. Why were his feet moving all erratically? I wonder if he was messing around.

You couldn't be more wrong.

When the ride reaches the top, the seats tilt forward. Go back and watch the video and while people are yelling to let them off, you can see the seats tilt back to their original position. That's why they couldn't be let off immediately.

That’s negligence on behalf of the operator.

The ride should not have been altered, but I believe all of these rides have to be inspected by a Govt agency that should have red flagged this ride.

Kid died because of our cultures lack of common sense. In the 80s the operator would have said, sorry kid you can't ride. Now we are more terrified of hurting people's feelings than killing them.

This a good example of why people too fat shouldn't be on these rides. The seat is not designed to hold that much volume. Luckily that fat girl in the gif had straps under her arms.

My guess is the seat was previously modified to accommodate fatties because of complaints they couldn't ride the ride.
