When I was about 5 years old I ate a can of black olives. Got sick and haven't been able to touch them since.

For most of the world, you are correct.
For some of the Muffuletta consuming public, olive salad/olive spread get used interchangeably, rightly or wrongly.

Haven't had olives in any manner that I didn't like. Although I do prefer them already seeded for ease of eating.
Nothing quite hurts like biting into some olives and biting on a seed that shouldn't be there in the first place.
