Wonder how much they'll enjoy a 20% pay cut?

I’d be ok with that if they still pay me at a 40/hr work week rate!

Nobody works a full day on Friday, anyway.

My employer is at 35. That's 9-5 with an hour for lunch. Doesn't really apply to management and sales, although in sales, they don't really care if they're "at work" as long as they have their phone and are making numbers.

I've been saying that a 4 hr week needs to he a thing. People just stay too busy now. I've has weekends where I was never at home.

They'll demand the 40 hour pay.
This is going to be a clusterfrick.
Companies will just put hourly employees on salary for four 8-hour days at the 40 hour work week, and then make an 8-hour Friday mandatory every week.
My company has already stated that the above is exactly what they'll do if certain states enact these laws, and California was specifically mentioned. If there's no way to circumvent the new policies, they'll run routes and product from outside facility locations like Oregon and Nevada into California, and they'll reduce their California facilities staffs to skeleton crews that work transfer stations as opposed to the full blown processing facilities they run currently.
They already have to pay their California facility workers and drivers 50% above the national company average just to get applicants, and then those applicants show up to work high and drunk and most of them only work long enough to qualify for unemployment and get themselves fired to collect it.
I would mention the demographics in our CA facility areas, but I think you probably already know.

It’s unbelievable how much the state of California feels like businesses owe them. They are literally gonna take, take, and take until they aren’t there anymore.

Cali should just join the EU and be done with it. Then we can debate whether they should be part of NATO.

28 hours seems much respectfully of the human condition.

They are already causing backlogs in international shipping. If this passes more product will be sitting on ships and docks waiting to be delivered

so 2 people file a bill and you says that's all of california?

You can pass a law all you want, but there will always be someone willing to work more to get ahead.
Make it a 35 hour work week, and someone will be willing to work twice that with overtime or get a second job, and generally do whatever it takes to get ahead.
Time is money. This is just another way to hand people free money.

Do it California, drive more companies out of your shitty state.

As long as the state follows the rule as well......
You'll need a tent to stand in line at the DMV.... and probably a sign to advise you are in line and not homeless (at the moment)

Public schools around my part of the world have taken a couple of runs at this. I've come to expect it from government. Never got any real traction; they tried blaming "the budget" and when that didn't work, it was covid or something else.
Whenever it comes up I just say "if 4 days is better than 5, wouldn't 3 be better than 4? How about you just sit on your arse at home and we'll mail you a check?" You can see the gears grinding to a halt in their otherwise empty skulls.

They’ll still have to pass the duties test in order to legally switch them from hourly to salary exempt. Not sure what type of work your California employees are doing.
