Just the other day, I watched one of the retired US Generals make the comment
“America doesn’t fight wars like that”

Does anybody remember WWII?

And I’m not even talking about the Atom bombs

We bombed the frick out of hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians and cities

Do you want me to get up here and defend any state in any war? Not happening. Russia is fricked up too.

Your point is absurd. America didn't just invade Japan willy nilly.

On March 10, 1945 over 100,000 civilians residents of Tokyo died from our bombing. In one day.

Hamburg Bombing

WW2 allied forces fricked civilians up here.

quote:

July 1943, code named Operation Gomorrah, created one of the largest firestorms raised by the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces in World War II,[2] killing an estimated 37,000 civilians and wounding 180,000 more in Hamburg, and virtually destroying most of the city.

We did not. We were attacked

But we did fire bomb Tokyo and Dresden for no military purpose. We did it to make our enemies want to quit

Same thing Putin is doing.

It is not an act of mental gymnastics to suggest that Roosevelt and Churchill committed “war crimes” far surpassing what Russia has committed this far

We did the same in Iraq and Afghanistan
The US is no better than Russia or China or Iran

That's a military purpose

I think the distinction is we didn't (in WWII) start an unnecessary war without serious provocation AND THEN commit war crimes, as Russia is likely doing.

Skipping over the part where Ukraine was largely doing nothing and Russia decided to invade it and resorted to bombing civilian areas to try and break the will of the non-aggressor state is the absurd part

Question: do you think this type of shite on this board is performative/trolling, or have actual college graduates become this deranged? This is a serious question.

The whole point of any war is to force the opponent to submit both physically and psychologically. Everyone fought wars the same way. Only in the last 30 or so years of world history has so-called “surgical strikes” been a thing. Not every country has the capability or the desire to painstakingly avoid civilian casualties. It sucks, but that’s what it is.

And we haven’t won a war since WWII when we did bomb civilians.

I don’t think you can truly win a war unless the civilian population says no more.

As distasteful as Russia’s and Putin’s actions might be, when Zelensky armed the general populace, he created an entire host of combatants that cannot be separated from the populace.

It is a military purpose as well.

I purposefully did not do Iraq

That said, I do suspect Russia has a more callous view of civilian casualties than we did in Iraq, regardless of the tally. But yeah, the pretext argument remains.

If we're going to speak academically on the topic of warfare, yes, I agree. But if we're talking about the conflict overall, it seems silly and/or dishonest to skip over the unilateral nature of the conflict growing into an invasion.
