Bc they're less adept at media manipulation than you may think, and want to be sure the world knows they ain't about that nazi life.

The Azov battalion and the other groups are a godsend to Russia. It has allowed them to frame themselves domestically as fighting the rise of neo fascism/Nazism. Obviously, the Russian people specifically are highly receptive to such a mission, given what the Russians suffering in WW2 and the high number of Ukrainians that fought with Germany.
It has also allowed Russia’s propaganda efforts internationally to paint Ukraine as a fascist nation, and dividing western nations politically in the process.
To answer OP: Because that’s how they’re justifying their actions. They are playing the historical long game on public perception because they know NATO doesn’t have the stomach to throw hands right now.

Because Ukraine has an entire battalion of Nazis? Because the opposition party was ran by a neo-fascist? Because Ukraine was a Nazi ally and responsible for the death of over 200k Jews?
