Alabama case alleges ‘critical mistakes’
LINK
TLDR version - Don't buy a DR Horton house.

Alicia and West Dixon purchased their first newly constructed home from D.R. Horton in 2014 because it was in the school district they desired and they liked the home’s layout.
Now, eight years later, they feel trapped in their Youngsville, Louisiana, house, which they say has toxic mold because of faulty construction that the builder didn’t properly address during the home’s warranty period.
quote:
The Dixons have become the face of what attorneys hope will become a class-action lawsuit against D.R. Horton and one of its subcontractors.
Ten south Louisiana attorneys sued D.R. Horton and Bell Mechanical Services in state court this week on behalf of the Dixons and thousands of other homeowners in Louisiana.
quote:
A lawsuit was recently filed in Alabama against D.R. Horton for “critical mistakes” in houses constructed in the Mobile area between 2015 and 2021 that have left homes at risk of “catastrophic failure.”
quote:
In 2016, a federal bankruptcy judge in Florida ruled that D.R. Horton engaged in deceptive practices that forced the bankruptcy of a homeowners association in Miami.
TLDR version - Don't buy a DR Horton house.

I thought it was a well known fact that Horton homes were shite

I feel for these homeowners but Louisiana’s New Home Warranty Act is stern.

Or DSLD etc. These homes will be falling down in 15 years

Horton homes are utter garbage.

And people buy them by the thousands.

So many of these in St. Tammany.

If the houses were built to code and inspected by relevant local authorities I’d predict Horton won’t be on the hook for much if they have any kind of decent lawyers with the argument they seem to be basing the class action on.

People drive me crazy buying the lowest per square house when they don't actually need the extra room. They are usually people that avoid most built to price point products but not in the most expensive and likely the longest-term product they will ever buy. These are the same people that will upgrade to $15 a sq floors over a shitty subfloor and put $100 a sq granite on top of cabinets with particle board boxes while having a 13 SEER HVAC system and a roof they will be lucky to get 15 years out of.

DR Horton is interested in buying several hundred of 1280 acres my wife has an interest in. Who knows.

Only way to avoid it is bad faith, which is what they are alleging.

Give me a quality-built 1,200 sq foot home over a 2,500 sq ft DR Horton POS

My father in law used to be a house builder. He was talking about this story this weekend. He said when he was building, Horton was notorious for closing up the framing without even checking humidity levels of the framing just to get them done as quickly as possible.

Youngsville flood of 2016.... home was built in 2014....hmmmm. I do know of a guy that ripped his drywall out one day after the flood and was putting new back up the next.... js

Uncle is a builder as well. He says the guts of a DR Horton are fine and up to code
They cut costs by using cheap interior finishes and by building in volume
The people who buy a Horton home are the types that wont do basic maintenance and also wont run HVAC consistently to keep humidity in the proper range

As a little mom and pop residential contractor in Iberia parish who hates all volume builder competitors, I approve this message! Lol. I've been building for 25+ years and the term "you get what you pay for" should have a picture of a new house next to it in the dictionary.

It’s straight up scary how fast they are slapping homes up in the subdivision before my own.
My in laws live in a nice subdivision that was being built at the time they moved in. After a year demand dropped a bit and the developer had trouble selling lots. DR Horton came in, purchased the lots, threw up shitty homes and absolutely ranked the value of the nice homes that were built by local contractors with high end features.

10 years is all you’ll get out of a dr Horton home. Either the house falls apart or the neighborhood goes to shite, or both.

All the DSLD homes in my area withstood Laura pretty easily.
