Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Elizabeth Warren say they’re working on a proposed new tax targeting profits being reaped by oil companies as crude prices spike amid geopolitical tensions.

“Big Oil’s first priority is to maximize profits,” Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, tweeted on Wednesday. “We can’t let them use Putin’s invasion as an excuse to pad their bottom line with war-fueled profits,” she said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. “So I’m working with Senate Democrats on a windfall-profits tax.”

The plan will require oil companies that produce or import at least 300,000 barrels of oil per day to pay a per-barrel tax equal to 50% of the difference between the current price of a barrel and the average price from the years 2015 to 2019, a period in which energy companies were recording large profits, according to a statement from Whitehouse’s office. Smaller oil companies will be exempt from the quarterly tax, so that large companies like Exxon Mobil Corp. and Chevron Corp., cannot raise prices without the threat of losing market share, according to the statement.

The revenue raised from the tax would be sent to individuals quarterly. The payments would phase out for individuals earning more than $75,000 or couples earning $150,000. Whitehouse, a Rhode Island Democrat, estimates that single filers would receive approximately $240 a year, and joint filers would get about $360.

Screw the poli board. This is straight up moving our country more towards socialism and lack of productivity. Dont make more than $50k or you'll lose your Big Oil tax check.

Make a company's product more expensive and then tax them for making more money

They ain’t coming off profits.

And if it does pass, they will sneak some other way to get the money back from us

It's hard to comprehend how some people think this is a good idea.

I'm just going to leave this here.

When we're all forced to electric cars, how are we going to fund our federal highways?

frick both of these assholes.

This is going to come back to the consumer, who is already paying at the pump for the shitty policies that these two have been backing for a decade now.

I am honestly baffled how anyone would think this is a good idea, especially now.

People change their behaviors when gas hits $4.00 a gallon. At $5.00, consumer spending takes a hit and the economy will slow.

Is that the goal here?

That extra $30 a month to couples and $20 a month for singles will make all the difference during these trying times.

Twitch streamers are raking in millions and getting paid cash and I'm lacing up my steel toed clown shoes and driving out to the middle of nowhere to work a rig.

What a time to be alive

Isn't this the main goal of pretty much every business?

This is pure gross. As dem governors all over the country are trying to pause gas taxes these psychopaths are trying to tax people more based purely on market forces. Just scum of the earth.

“Big Oil’s first priority is to maximize profits,” Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat,

Does Pocahontus not understand that any business' first priority is to maximize profits? Does she not also understand that consumers ultimately pay the tax?

That's pretty much anyone. And oil is always sold to the highest bidder, unfortunately where it's going, or coming in from.
