Objective look at Bianco and Gio on offense and defense

Bianco
Hit .246 last season with only 1 error in 122 chances playing multiple positions.
0 for 6 with no errors this year in limited action
Gio
Hit .293 last season with 0 errors in 50 chances.
Batting .333 (5 of 15) with no errors (7 chances) and a great catch going back toward wall that saved a double.
IMO, if both are put in the lineup and given a chance to get consistent ABs to get in a rhythm at the plate, they could hit ~ .240 and .275 at worst and play good defense at 2nd and CF.

Who are you taking out the lineup for these guys?
Posted on 3/7/22 at 1:38 pm to Jack Daniel
take merrifield out, move doughty to 3rd. put bianco at 2B. move Berry to DH. Gio in RF
atleast give it a try...
atleast give it a try...

I’ll agree with the first part but you’re replacing Jobert with Gio. No thanks.

I think we triangulate between Gio / Bianco / Merrifield.

One thing I notice about Johnson that differs from Mainieri is that Johnson tinkers with the lineup but not with starters. He likes to bring them in as pinch hitters in the middle of the game. Mainieri would change the starting lineup three times a week early in the season. Not sure if one is better than the other, just something I noticed.

No reason that this shouldn’t at least be given a look this week? Now we do we do about the Human Error Machine at SS?

I'm not sure that will continue. I think he wanted to get a look at guys, then he'll settle on something. If he keeps up the pinch hitting and shuffling, he will fail. I'm not saying that guys shouldn't get an opportunity to start a game or for a pinch hit on occasion in the flow of the game, but what he has been doing is not going to work.

I agree that potentially Jobert is a much better hitter, but he struggled this weekend against pitching that will be similar to SEC Friday/Saturday arms.
On the flip side, Jobert needs to get ABs against good arms to see if he can improve enough to stay in lineup.
The advantage with Gio besides defense is that he can steal bases when he gets on. An infield single and stolen base is equal to a double.

Gio is the one for me. That's a guy that you know will give you solid defense AND hit. He should be in the lineup.

Now, you’ve got Jobert out of the lineup. Non starter for me. Jobert in RF. Gio doesn’t give you enough defensively to make up for what you lose by taking Jobert out of the lineup. Besides, Gio doesn’t help with the specific defensive problems. It’s the infield and Berry. Berry to DH and Jobert to RF at least takes care of Berry being on the field. You want to give Gio some starts, give him some in LF. Dugas could sit a game a week or so.

This is the time and these are the games to experiment.
CPM tinkered as well. Where he totally lost me was not merely platooning a player or two but the wild lineup swings even in post-season. It was time.

I agree I don't think it will continue either. But I think at some point you've got to give some of these players (Gio, Bianco, etc) some starts if you really want to evaluate them. You can't keep bringing guys in to pinch hit in the 5th or 6th inning for an AB or two and expect to get the best out of them. That's just my opinion.

How much more production at the plate do you expect Jobert to give you over Gio?
TBH, Jobert didn't look great this weekend. I mean, if it's decisive, then let's roll with Jobert. I just didn't see it this weekend.

Forget us/Crews/LSU. In general, given the choice of a CF hitting 0.275 with a gold glove vs. one hitting 0.300+ with a weak glove, I'll take the first guy.

I'm not ready to declare Jobert better than Dugas just yet.

Gio got 6 at bats against Maine and did fine, but didn't get much more time until Texas. It's very possible that Jay knows that Gio is his best option but still wanted to look at other things. He has done everything he could have to stay in the lineup.
Bianco was hurt coming into the season. He started behind. Just a tough spot for him.

We keep feeding him reps. I think he’s our best hope at a real short stop on this team.

The infatuation with Digiacomo is weird

Oh hell no. I wouldn’t sit Dugas unless he’s limping.
He’s not getting much to hit this year yet. He’s getting walked and plunked, not seeing pitches to hit.
