A reporter asked: “Sir, sanctions clearly have not been enough to deter Vladimir Putin to this point. What is going to stop him?” Biden answered: “No one expected the sanctions to prevent anything from happening.” That was news to Washington and beyond, where people believed their deliberations and preparations were intended to do precisely that.

Another reporter asked: “If sanctions cannot stop President Putin, what penalty can?” Biden said: “I didn’t say sanctions couldn’t stop him.” Perhaps stunned at Biden contradicting his own words, uttered just moments before, the reporter tried again: “But you’ve been talking about the threat of these sanctions for several weeks now.” Biden interrupted: “Yes, but the threat of the sanctions and imposing the sanctions and seeing the effect of the sanctions are two different things… He’s going to begin to see the effect of the sanctions.” If that wasn’t bad enough, Biden said repeatedly that “this is going to take time”, as though every day in Ukraine isn’t agonising.

I don't know why Bolton is upset. He's got his war.

Those comments make perfect sense. There IS a difference between the threat of sanctions and the effect of sanctions. Does someone think sanctions are like a magic laser or something?

He's like a dim-witted version of the Texas Governor in "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas".

There's literally nothing the left can do or say that you won't defend to the death. We could carpet bomb Denmark and you'd tell us they had it coming

There is also a BIG difference between effective deterrence an ineffective deterrence.

Guess which one your Competent Leader has chosen?

I'll give you a hint... it's the one which ends up with a Country getting fricking invaded and thousands of lives slaughtered.

Wouldn't the sanctions have to be pre-emptive to stop him? Of course sanctions aren't going to stop him if he's already done what you wanted to stop.

So what would you have recommended? That Biden threaten to bomb Moscow? So then Putin invades, and what? Do you have to bomb Moscow?

That sentient push broom has yet to meet an armed conflict he didn't love.

Definitely not recommending he do that, but Trump did and we had relative peace in Ukraine for 4 years. You know, the guy who you cried was a complete imbecile and would start WW3?

I think you are missing the part where he said no one expects sanctions to do anything. Meaning they have no effect.

This is no longer a nation ran by serious people. That’s why no matter the issue, every day brings us a new episode of Clown World.

They are powerful people. They are rich and well connected people. They believe it is their birthright to rule over us.

But they are not serious people. The adults have left the building in this country.

Biden is a stuttering, bumbling idiot but i sort of understood what he was trying to say....

sanctions or the threat of sanctions wasn't going to deter Putin and that only sanctions over time may affect his decision making

Certainly, most folk understand that sanctions aren't a magic spell that are immediately effective and gradually impose discomfort on the population.
I'd hope Biden understands this also, but his inability to articulate makes ya wonder.
He could best serve his country by never taking questions, thereby limiting exposing the lack of cognitive abilities.

Why should we? The current approach seems to be well executed and appears to have a likelihood of long term success.
