Are COL Raises in Sales Uncommon These Days?

A buddy and I both work in tech sales for the same company. We are salary + commission. Is it uncommon to go 3-4 years without an cost of living raise for base salary in the tech sales world, or any sales filed at that?
Just wondering what other in the sales world are experiencing. I'm sure it varies but thought I would see if this is uncommon.

Often times you need to change jobs to get a raise.

Not sure.
I am sure that everyone is getting a paycut every day as this inflation is heading for the Moon.

I haven't received a raise in eight years so I wouldn't know. Actually, everyone had their salary cut in 2020 10%

A COL raise after taxes might buy you lunch once every two weeks

I’ve been in sales for about 20 years. Our bonuses have changed, but usually the only way I get a raise to make more sales.

A raise in sales is usually provided by the salesman actually selling something. It comes from you doing your job and directly increasing your income or making your company more profitable and hopefully securing a

Uh no.
If you are a good salesman you get the money in commissions. If your commission suck after obtaining your AOP then it’s your fault. You get what you negotiate.

Exactly. Sales with salary makes no sense. Go earn more money if you want more money. If you can’t do that at your current job, go get a different one. If you aren’t good enough to sell more, go back to purchasing.

I'm top in sales on my team so I get the earn it with commissions part. More or less asking for my buddy who reached out to management about a raise on his base.
We've been inundated with operations task hindering sales with no incentives, so this is leading to frustrations with the team as we aren't able to sell as much.

It's always fair to take your case to your employer.
State your case in an organized, logical, non-emotional, businesslike manner. And then your employer gets to choose his response.
After that, you get to make the decision to stay or leave.
I understand your original question, but in reality, even if a COLR was normal for the guys down the street, it's not relevant to what happens in your house. And hopefully, one wouldn't argue that "the guys down the street got one!"
One won't know if the boss thinks he's being under or over paid until you ask for a raise.
Good luck to your friend

My organization does a continuous performance review every quarter and an annual review at the end of every year. Everyone who scores favorably and meets a minimum score gets an annual merit increase to their base. The increase ranges from 3-5% depending how well you score during your year end review and also where you are in your pay grade.

Forget a raise on the base, ask the company to remove tasks that don't make sales. More commission will always be more $$$ than any raise on the base.

correct answer.
my employer for example admitted this year, they didn’t take inflation into consideration when factoring in raises/promotions. And honestly like other companies i’m not sure they care, because they can save a few bucks, eat the attrition, and then maybe factor it in once their employee count is lower.
I got a fat fricking raise compared to most this year, but when you subtract out 7.5+% inflation….it wasn’t so great.

Sales I wouldn't expect if you get commission. My company hasn't given COLA for several years now.

That is a long time. I’d inquire about it but call it a merit increase. Most sales positions I see will increase base 1-3% if targets are met.

I’m in sales for a Caterpillar dealer and we haven’t received COL adjustment in quite some time. It also seems that very new commission plan eats into our earning potential.. this is frustrating due to the company making record profits last year. With our current lack of inventory I’m starting to think about making a career change

Typically everyone in my company gets annual raises except sales people. I asked my VP once and he said, “if salespeople want a raise all they have to do is go out and get one”
